The main campus of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ( Thai Nguyen University) is located on high ground, avoiding flooding, but many non-resident students are still directly affected. The dormitories were flooded deeply, nearly 2 meters in some places, sweeping away many properties, books, completely disrupting the lives and studies of the students.

Dormitory of University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Thai Nguyen University) submerged in water.
Dr. Nguyen Quang Dong - Deputy Head of the School's Administration and Organization Department said that the school has more than 10,000 students, of which only about 260 students live in dormitories. However, nearly 1,000 non-resident students are directly affected by the flood, mainly in low-lying, deeply flooded areas.
Despite an urgent announcement on the morning of October 8 calling on students and lecturers in flooded or unsafe areas to come to school for temporary shelter, the number of students who came was “countable on the fingers of one hand”. Prolonged flooding caused power and internet outages in many places, making it difficult to contact students.
“We tried to maintain contact via Zalo group, calling each class and each small group to understand the situation, but we are still very worried. The water level in the dormitory has receded, many areas around the city are still deeply flooded, many students are isolated,” said a school representative.
The water was still rising, and only buoys or lifeboats could be used for transportation. In this situation, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy established an emergency relief team of 300 volunteers, quickly deployed to support students, staff and people cut off by floodwaters.

Prepare food and provisions for students and people in flooded areas.
According to Mr. Ha The Duy - Secretary of the Youth Union of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, who directly commanded the rescue team, because the school did not have its own boat, the team had to borrow vehicles from outside rescue forces. One group went to provide relief and transport goods, the other group stayed at the school to cook hot rice, prepare medicine and drinking water to send to the isolated area.
The biggest challenges for the rescue team were deep floods, power outages, lack of clean water and weak phone signals, making it difficult to contact the stranded students. Volunteers had to make individual phone calls and contact small groups to get a sense of the location and situation.

Flood water was deep, up to 2 meters in some places, making rescue work difficult.
After nearly an hour of struggling, the team reached the dormitory area. Many students stood on the second floor waving when they saw the rescue boat appear. When the boat reached the shore, members quickly brought students and relief supplies to the school's assembly point.
Here, the school arranged the lecture hall as a temporary accommodation. Hot meals, medicine and drinking water were prepared and distributed as soon as the students arrived. Without a break, another group of the rescue team immediately boarded a boat and headed to the remaining flooded areas to continue providing support.

By 11 p.m. on October 8, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy's rescue team had evacuated more than 100 students and residents from dormitories and low-lying areas.
According to statistics as of 11pm on October 8, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy's relief team evacuated more than 100 students and residents from dormitories and low-lying areas. The team also made dozens of trips to transport food, drinking water and medicine to surrounding flooded areas.
On October 9, the relief team is expected to continue transporting essential supplies to the remaining isolated areas. Volunteers are also working at full capacity, supporting the evacuation of students and residents from flooded areas, despite the severe weather.
