Cambodia's new Foreign Minister is an old man

The Cambodian National Assembly today, November 20, unanimously approved the appointment of former Deputy Prime Minister and former Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs .


Mr. Prak Sokhonn (70 years old) replaced Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea (68 years old) - who has held the position of foreign minister and deputy prime minister in the government of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet since late August 2023. Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea will remain as deputy prime minister, according to the Khmer Times .

Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary announced the results after all 112 lawmakers present, including Prime Minister Hun Manet, voted in favor of Prak Sokhonn.

Before the vote, Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined the reasons behind the cabinet reshuffle, emphasizing the need to strengthen the implementation of Cambodia's foreign policy. He stressed the importance of adhering to the principles of independence and international law to protect the country's core interests.

"This change aims to promote the more effective implementation of Cambodia's foreign policy. It is necessary to maintain and strengthen traditional relations, solidarity and multi-sectoral cooperation with major countries and partners for common interests," Mr. Hun Manet emphasized.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to playing a more active role in the international arena. "The Southeast Asian country will continue to engage more actively with the world for the sake of peace and stability, as well as to address global challenges," Hun Manet said.

Mr. Prak Sokhonn served as Cambodia's foreign minister from 2016 to 2023. His reappointment is seen as a move to strengthen Cambodia's diplomatic relations amid many regional and international challenges, according to Khmer Times .
