ASEAN to discuss US tariffs in October
Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Zafrul Aziz said the ASEAN Economic Committee Council (AECC) will hold a meeting in late October to discuss the latest issue regarding US tariffs.
Malaysia is assessing the impact on its industries after the latest tariffs on pharmaceuticals, furniture, auto parts and aerospace products, Zafrul said. “This is expected. We just want to know when, and we will wait for details on how the tariffs will affect certain sectors,” he stressed.
Minister Zafrul affirmed that Malaysia’s position has always been to continue to engage with the US on tariff issues – a similar stance that ASEAN member states have adopted. At the regional level, ASEAN continues to support a rules-based multilateral trading system, with the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core.
Zafrul noted that the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Economic Ministers Meeting will take place on October 25, ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit, to discuss the current geo-economic fragmentation. “This is the first time we are having a joint meeting, and the ASEAN Geo-Economic Task Force (AGTF) will present its report and recommendations to both the foreign ministers and economic ministers,” he said.
