Andy Carroll was disillusioned when he returned to play football in England. |
At the age of 36, the former England striker was expected to be a mainstay for Dagenham & Redbridge, but the harsh reality is pushing both him and the club into the abyss.
Carroll was sent off on his debut, marking a disastrous start to his return to English football. Dagenham's decline continued, dropping to 21st place in the National League South with 11 points, facing relegation.
The tragedy did not stop when this club just lost 1-2 at home to semi-professional team Horsham. The result made coach Lee Bradbury face a wave of anger from the home crowd.
In contrast, Horsham coach Dom Di Paola was jubilant: "We beat a professional team, while the players ran straight from work to the pitch. It was unbelievable. Danny Barker played like a monster. This is the best group of players I have ever managed."
For Dagenham, the defeat was not only embarrassing, but also sounded the alarm bells for a project that had hoped to be revived by Carroll’s reputation. The striker himself is now struggling in the 6th Division, without a goal or assist.
Off the pitch, Carroll's life was no better. He was constantly in the news for his on-and-off relationship with designer Lou Teasdale. According to The Sun , the two tried to reconcile, while Carroll struggled with the relationship and his fading career.
