Another giant fish has just been returned to the Mekong River.

Specifically, Cambodian research and management agencies have coordinated with the Mekong Wonders Organization to release into the wild a giant catfish measuring 204cm in length, 110cm in circumference and weighing about 110kg. This is one of the four famous giant fish species of the Mekong River. The fish was caught by a local fisherman in Prek Tasek commune, Chroy Chongvar district, Phnom Penh. Local people informed environmental protection organizations to rescue it. This lucky fish was released back to the area where it was caught.

The giant fish was fitted with a tracking device before being released back into the wild.

In June 2022, in Stung Treng province (Cambodia), a female freshwater stingray weighing 300 kg and measuring up to 4 meters in length was released back into the Mekong River. This is the largest freshwater stingray ever recorded in the world . Previously, in May 2022, a stingray weighing about 180 kg was also released. Both of these fish were caught by Cambodian fishermen and were voluntarily reported to environmental protection organizations by the people to return them to the Mekong River.

In 2022, the release of giant freshwater stingrays into the wild became a media event and attracted the attention of many major press agencies around the world. This is a 182kg fish.

The freshwater stingray is one of four species considered treasures and symbols of the Mekong River - one of the world's most biologically diverse rivers with about 1,000 fish species. They are a source of livelihood and economy for tens of millions of people living along the basin, especially in the lower reaches of Cambodia and Vietnam. However, this river and its natural fish reserves are seriously threatened by upstream hydroelectric dams. According to many fishermen in the area, fish production has decreased sharply to only about 20 - 30% compared to more than a decade ago, making their lives more and more difficult.
