Reduced 11 exam scores after inspection
On June 16, the first time the Thai Binh Department of Education and Training announced the exam results and benchmark scores, H. was surprised to score 35.7 points. Of which, Math scored 9 points, Literature 7.75 points and English 2.2 points. The benchmark score is the total score of 3 exam subjects (Math, Literature multiplied by coefficient 2), H. passed the first choice to Quach Dinh Bao Primary, Secondary and High School. "When I looked at the exam scores, my hands kept shaking. The whole family looked at them for the 3rd time but the exam scores remained unchanged. My homeroom teacher also looked at them and confirmed that I passed. The whole family was very happy and encouraged me to study," Ms. HTL (75 years old, NQH's grandmother) shared. H. said that although he was surprised by the exam results, he was the only one in the class who encountered this situation, so he did not think that the exam score was unusual. It was only at the end of July, when some parents reported that the 10th grade exam was "abnormal" and that some candidates had increased their scores by 4-5 points after the re-examination, that H. "felt guilty" about his exam score. "During the exam inspection, I was worried and impatient because I could also assess my own ability," H. shared. On the morning of August 20, when checking the results after the inspection, as expected, H.'s exam score decreased quite a bit compared to the beginning. He scored 24.7 points, down 11 points. Of which, the two essay tests, Literature, scored 5.75 points and Math 5.5. The English subject, because it was a multiple-choice test, kept the same score.
H. failed his first choice. The male student was quite shocked because he did not expect the Department of Education and Training to allow such a large number of errors. However, although he was sad and continued to worry about passing or failing in the second round of admission, H. said he was "relieved because the scores returned were consistent with his own abilities."
On the afternoon of August 20, H. went to withdraw his application at Quach Dinh Bao school. Currently, he is wondering whether to submit his application for the second round of admission to Tien Hung High School - a public school but 15 km away from home, or to Nguyen Thai Binh High School - a private school near home but with high tuition fees. "The family is very confused because there is not much time left. I have never seen such an error in Thai Binh province. The psychology of the children and their families is greatly affected, but we accept it because the actual score is only like that," Ms. L. told Tri Thuc - Znews.
Urgently correct exam errors
According to the Thai Binh Provincial Inspectorate, the total number of essay exams with incorrect scores was 2,769, 1,589 candidates had incorrect total admission scores. 252 candidates went from failing to passing, including 15 candidates who passed Thai Binh Specialized High School. On the contrary, 15 candidates were also eliminated from the list of candidates admitted to specialized schools, 243 candidates from the general high school exam board went from passing to failing their first choice.
The inspection team manually matched 100% of the essay exams (no re-scoring of the exams), determining that 11/29 general high schools and 4/12 specialized classes of Thai Binh Specialized High Schools had increased/decreased entrance scores. Mr. Dang Van Phong, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh province, said that the department has a plan to deploy work in the coming time to overcome errors in the exam, ensuring that the new school year takes place in accordance with regulations. According to the 2024-2025 school year schedule of the People's Committee of Thai Binh province, general education and continuing education students in the province will return to school on August 29, opening on September 5. Previously, a number of high schools in Thai Binh province announced the postponement of gathering 10th grade students at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.
Speaking with Tri Thuc - Znews, Mr. Hoang Van Thiep, Principal of Thai Binh Pedagogical College (Quach Dinh Bao Primary, Secondary & High School is a affiliated unit) said that in the 2024-2025 school year, Quach Dinh Bao School was assigned to enroll 450 students. Of which, in the first round, the school recruited 410 students with an initial admission score of 31.5 points. On the morning of August 20, after the inspection conclusion and the latest announcement from the Department of Education and Training, the school's first round admission score decreased to 30.9 points.
