The ship carrying 900 bottles of wine was sunk by a German U-boat in 1917. Accordingly, all the luxury goods on board sank to the bottom of the Baltic Sea with the ill-fated ship. Photo: Ocean X.

The Swedish diving team Ocean X recovered 900 bottles from 65 barrels. Of these, 50 were cognac. The batch is believed to have been destined for Russian aristocrats, possibly even Tsar Nicholas II. Photo: Ocean X.

According to experts, although 900 bottles of wine have been "sleeping" at the bottom of the sea for more than 100 years, they are still drinkable. The reason is that the cold, murky waters of the Baltic Sea create surprisingly good conditions for wine preservation. Photo: Ocean X.

Although some bottles have had their corks pushed in by the intense water pressure, many bottles still retain their iron seals for more than a century. Photo: Ocean X.

Some experts believe that the newly salvaged bottles are not only worth enjoying, but could also fetch high prices (estimated at $5,000 - $10,000 per bottle) at future auctions. Photo: GETTY.

Scientists and research experts will conduct tests and carefully analyze the quality of the wine in 900 bottles to see if they are suitable for drinking. Photo: Ocean X Team.

The ship carrying the expensive wine was identified as Kyros. This was a Swedish ship. Although Sweden was a neutral country during World War I (1914 - 1918), Germany and Russia were enemies, so the German Navy was ordered to sink any ship carrying goods to a Russian port. So, a German U-boat sank the Kyros on May 19, 1917. Photo: Courtesy of Ixplorer.

The Kyros wreck was damaged by fishing nets throughout the 20th century and was not rediscovered until 1999. After more than 100 years, bottles of De Haartman & Co. cognac and Benedictine were recovered from the ocean floor, 77m below the surface. Photo: Nigel Marsh/iStock.

In addition to the alcohol, divers also recovered parts of a Luger pistol and bullets from the wreck of the Kyros. In addition, the cargo manifest also showed that the ship was carrying steel and machinery parts, possibly to support Russia in World War I. Photo: Ocean X Team.
