The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is collecting opinions and finalizing a draft decree to replace Decree 152 of 2018 of the Government "Regulating policies and regimes for sports team members participating in training and competitions". If the revised Decree 152 is approved by the Government, it will certainly create an unprecedented breakthrough for Vietnamese sports.

Currently, the remuneration regime for athletes and sports coaches is implemented according to three documents: Decree 152 of 2018, Decree 36 of 2019 and Circular 86 of 2020.

According to these regulations, an athlete joining the national team will receive a salary of about 7 million VND/person/month and a meal allowance of 320,000 VND/person/day.

Due to the low remuneration for athletes, the short career span and high risks, sports have had difficulty attracting talent in recent years. Recruiting young athletes has been very difficult because few families want their children to pursue a sports career, even if they are talented.

The 2016 Olympic champion - Colonel Hoang Xuan Vinh - once shared that he was very concerned because as a soldier, he was lucky to receive the best investment and treatment from the army.

However, the vast majority of Vietnamese sports athletes enjoy low, equal treatment, which is not commensurate with and does not encourage their dedication.

Having to compete while worrying about money makes athletes feel uneasy about training. "If there is strong investment, I believe that Vietnamese shooting will have Olympic medals in the near future," said former shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh.

Long jumper Bui Thi Thu Thao, the only person in history to have brought home an Asian Games gold medal for Vietnamese athletics in 2018, said sports cannot accelerate if the lives of athletes are not improved.

Although she is a prestigious Asian Games champion, Thu Thao's salary in the national team is only 7 million VND/month, the same as an athlete joining the national team for the first time. To be able to pursue sports, Thu Thao has to do many other jobs.

These concerns of athletes and coaches will be greatly reduced if draft decree 152 is approved by the Government in the near future.

According to the draft decree, the remuneration for athletes and sports coaches will be increased by an average of 2 to 10 times.

Specifically, the salary of national team athletes will be on average 14 million VND/person/month and 405,000 VND/person/day for food. SEA Games, Asiad, Olympic champions will be rewarded 60 million VND, 700 million VND, 3.5 billion VND respectively.

In addition, athletes who win gold medals at the Asian Games, gold medals, qualify for the Olympics and win Paralympic medals will receive an additional allowance of 10 to 40 million VND per month for 4 years. For the first time, female athletes will receive a subsidy of 1.5 million VND/person/month.

At the 2023 Asiad, the Vietnamese sports delegation only won 3 gold medals, ranked 6th in Southeast Asia and 21st in Asia.

Even at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Vietnamese sports returned empty-handed and this is the second consecutive Olympics without a medal. Therefore, if the revised draft Decree 152 is passed, this will be a great source of encouragement, worthy treatment and create a strong driving force for Vietnamese sports to accelerate in the coming time.
