President-elect Trump will be sentenced before inauguration day

Before returning to the White House on January 20, President-elect Donald Trump will have to return to court in New York City (New York State) to hear the verdict, after the judge rejected his request despite his historic victory on November 5, 2024.

Judge Juan Merchant will sentence Donald Trump on January 10, 10 days before his inauguration on January 20, an unprecedented development in the 248-year history of the United States.

With the above decision, Judge Merchant rejected Mr. Trump's request that the trial be dismissed after he is elected president on November 5, 2024, Reuters reported on January 4.

Before Inauguration Day, President-elect Trump must hear the verdict

Judge Merchant said Mr Trump could come to court or attend the sentencing hearing remotely.

The judge also said he had no intention of sentencing the president-elect to prison, even though a jury in May 2024 found Mr. Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to pay hush money to a porn star before the 2016 US presidential election.

The judge said setting aside the jury's verdict "undermines the rule of law."

Judge Merchuan also said the "most feasible solution" in this case is to sentence but "release unconditionally", meaning no detention, no fine or probation for the defendant.

Mr. Trump is also expected to appeal.

In response to the subpoena, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said the case should not have been sentenced, and the US Constitution clearly states that the case must be dismissed immediately.
