This year's tournament brings together 375 male and female boxers from 29 delegations from provinces, cities and sectors across the country, competing in 54 weight classes in two age groups: 17-18 and 19-40.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Nam Nhan said: "The tournament is an important occasion to select the best boxers to represent Vietnam Boxing to participate in the 33rd SEA Games taking place at the end of the year in Thailand.
With high professional goals, in addition to creating opportunities for domestic athletes to compete and improve their skills and tactics, Ho Chi Minh City is determined to organize the tournament in a professional manner, creating the best conditions for the delegations and athletes to compete comfortably with the highest spirit of dedication.
On the first day of competition, 25 matches took place in the 19-40 age group. Host Ho Chi Minh City opened smoothly with 3 victories by Tran Dong Du (men's -57kg category), Nguyen Tan Hung (men's 71kg category) and Nguyen Phi Khoa (men's 60kg category).
The Army team continued to assert its “leading” position with 6 wins in a row. Hanoi also had an impressive start with 3 wins.
The tournament runs until October 12. All matches will be livestreamed on the Vietnam Boxing Federation's fanpage.
