The Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee recently held a conference to summarize 50 years of Ho Chi Minh City Literature and Arts after the country's reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025). Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang attended and delivered a speech with artists.
Also attending the Conference were Party Central Committee member, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Le Quoc Phong; Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Education Commission Tran Thanh Lam; Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong; leaders and former leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, professional associations and especially the team of artists in the field of literature and arts of the City.
Summary of 50 years of Literature and Arts after the country's reunification
Speaking at the Conference, Secretary of the City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang was moved to express his gratitude to generations of artists: “First of all, please allow me, on behalf of the City leaders, to express my thanks to generations of artists, whether famous or silent, who have contributed over the past 50 years to the development of literature, art and the cultural appearance of Ho Chi Minh City.
It is from those persistent contributions that the City today has the position we see today."

Today, being able to sit in the same auditorium and say thank you is a true happiness." The Secretary emphasized that the biggest purpose of the conference is not only to summarize but also to be an opportunity to meet, express gratitude and inspire.
Secretary Tran Luu Quang said he did not read the prepared 9-page speech because "Mr. Duc's (Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Duong Anh Duc - PV) report was complete, and the opinions of the artists were too good." He wanted to turn his speech into a sincere dialogue between the City's leaders and the artists.
Responding to comments at the conference, the Secretary specifically mentioned People's Artist Dao Ba Son's suggestion on cultivating the soul of the City's people: "If we put it in one sentence, this is our greatest mission. The City will work with artists to make efforts to do that, because it is something that must be done, something that cannot be avoided."
With the proposal of Architect Khuong Van Muoi and many delegates about Ho Chi Minh cultural space, the Secretary informed: "The current policy of the City Party Committee is to temporarily stop handing over the land of Ben Nha Rong - Ho Chi Minh Museum for the housing project.
Instead, the City will expand this area into a park, a Ho Chi Minh cultural space - exactly as the artists wish.
He also added that the land plot at 1 Ly Thai To (between Hung Vuong and Ly Thai To streets) will be converted into a cultural and art park, sponsored by a strategic investor.
Here, the City plans to build a monument to commemorate those who died in the Covid-19 pandemic, and arrange a multi-functional space for cultural and artistic activities.
“I have asked foreign architects to design this place to be an open space with electricity, toilets, and auxiliary works… so that everyone can come to live, perform, and hold small exhibitions. Such public cultural and artistic works will be given top priority, just after schools and hospitals,” said Secretary Tran Luu Quang.
Regarding the planning of the two banks of the Saigon River, the Secretary said that the City still maintains the priority for public spaces and cultural spaces. However, this is still entangled with legal issues, clearance, and large investment capital, so it needs time and a suitable roadmap.
The Secretary shared: “We have to face the reality that the City still owes many projects, from urban railways to infrastructure. But despite the difficulties, we still determine to give the highest priority to projects that create space for cultural, artistic and community development.”
According to the Secretary, "HCMC is currently the largest center in the country and in the coming years, no one will be able to surpass it. The city is honored to be named after Uncle Ho, we must not be satisfied, but must continue to strive to be worthy of the position, trust and expectations that the whole country has for the city."
At the conference, generations of artists shared their passion, expressed their belief and hope in the sustainable development of Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts in the new period.
Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc expressed his wish that Ho Chi Minh City would soon organize an International Theatre Festival, creating conditions for domestic artists to exchange and learn the quintessence of world theatre, while promoting the image of Vietnamese culture and arts internationally.
Screenwriter Duong Cam Thuy, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Literature and Arts Associations, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Cinema Association, said that after 50 years of development, the City's literature and arts continue to affirm their own unique characteristics, with strong creative imprints.
She recommended that the City pay more attention to space, environment and creative conditions, creating more opportunities for artists to create and contribute many works to serve the revolutionary cause and the spiritual life of the people.
Representing veteran artists, People's Artist - Director Dao Ba Son emphasized that Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts today can be proud of its diverse, modern art scene imbued with humanity.
He proposed that the City consider forming cultural industrial zones, film studios, and performance centers as a "creative belt" to promote sustainable cultural and artistic development in the future.
Singer Vo Ha Tram expressed her hope that Ho Chi Minh City will continue to invest in open performance spaces, youth talent training programs and regular stages to serve the people, thereby nurturing the next generation of artists and spreading art widely in the city's life.
People's Artist Le Thuy expressed concern about the increasingly difficult situation of the reformed theater stage, with audiences gradually decreasing, while dedicated artists are still diligently maintaining their profession.
She believes that Ho Chi Minh City needs to have a long-term investment policy for the Cai Luong stage, especially in terms of performance space, training of young artists and creative support mechanisms, so that this traditional art form can continue to shine in urban cultural life.
Secretary Tran Luu Quang shared and accepted the contributions and ideas of the artists for the development of the literature and arts sector as well as the overall development of the City.
“The most important thing is how we can inspire the young generation, so that those who are and will become City artists continue to nurture their souls and creative aspirations,” he emphasized.
