Ho Chi Minh City focuses on developing waterway transport to reduce road traffic

The Department of Construction urgently develops a Project to develop Ho Chi Minh City's waterway infrastructure for the 2026-2030 period, clearly defining the objectives, policy mechanisms, priorities and implementation progress, forming a modern, synchronous and regionally connected waterway network.

On the afternoon of October 15, the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee announced the conclusion of Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong on investment and construction of key projects to develop the waterway transport network, waterway infrastructure, ports and wharves in the city.

Accordingly, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City assigned the Department of Construction to preside over and coordinate with departments, branches and localities to review and make a detailed list of the city's waterway network, routes, wharves and ports, update related planning projects, and ensure completion before October 31. At the same time, develop a Project to develop Ho Chi Minh City's waterway infrastructure for the period 2026 - 2030, clearly defining the objectives, policy mechanisms, priority order and implementation progress, forming a modern, synchronous and regional waterway network. Report and propose to complete the Project to submit to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City before October 31.

In addition, the Department of Construction proactively works with the Ministry of Construction to receive guidance on specialized contents; speed up the progress of inland waterway projects such as Thanh Da river embankment, dredging and embellishing rivers and canals.

Coordinate with the Department of Tourism to research and update waterway tourism routes, develop modern and civilized marina and river tourism models, and create unique tourism products for Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, prepare working content with Dong Nai province on planning and investing in infrastructure connecting the two localities.

Developing waterway transport is a strategic orientation, contributing to building Ho Chi Minh City into a modern, smart, and sustainably developed city associated with rivers.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requests departments, branches and localities to urgently deploy, coordinate synchronously and on schedule. At the same time, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Office is responsible for monitoring, urging and synthesizing the implementation results to report to the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
