On June 21, the Hanoi People's Court opened a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Mai Xuan Thai (41 years old, residing in Hanoi) to death for murder.
Defendant Mai Xuan Thai was sentenced to death for murder.
According to the case file, at the end of November 2021, through a yoga class, Thai met Ms. Q., and then the two developed a romantic relationship.
After a while, a conflict arose between the two, and Ms. Q. wanted to end the relationship. However, Thai did not agree, wanting to hold on, even calculating that if she refused, he would kill Ms. Q. and then commit suicide.
At noon on August 11, 2022, Thai followed Ms. Q. to yoga class. There, Thai opened the trunk, took out a sharp knife, and sat in front of the gym door waiting for Ms. Q.
At around 1:20 p.m. the same day, Ms. Q. left the gym and headed to work in the direction of Pho Hue - Hang Bai (Hanoi). Thai chased her on his motorbike, blocked her car and forced her to stop.
The defendant asked Ms. Q: "How are you now?", Ms. Q replied: "Get out of my life". After that, the two argued.
When Ms. Q. got on her motorbike and was about to leave, Thai stabbed her in the back with a knife. Ms. Q. got off the motorbike and ran away, but Thai chased after her and stabbed her many more times, killing her on the spot.
After committing the crime, Thai took a knife and stabbed himself in the stomach many times in an attempt to commit suicide, then threw the weapon on the street and approached the place where Ms. Q. had died, lying down and hugging the victim.
Because he was taken to the hospital in time, Thai did not die.
