Gia Lai: Preserving the fishing festival associated with tourism .
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just issued a decision approving the Project to preserve and promote the value of the Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival (Quy Nhon Dong ward, Gia Lai province) associated with tourism development and new rural construction.
According to the decision, the Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival of Gia Lai fishermen along with the Kate festival of the Cham people in Khanh Hoa were selected to be piloted in the program of preserving and linking intangible cultural heritage with tourism development. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism assigned the Department of Cultural Heritage to preside over and coordinate with the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the two provinces and related units to implement the project.
The Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival is associated with the whale worshiping belief (the god of the South Sea, Whale) of coastal residents, with the meaning of praying for favorable weather, safe fishing trips, and full holds of fish and shrimp. At the same time, this is also an occasion to demonstrate the spirit of solidarity and community cohesion, contributing to preserving the unique cultural values of the ancient Nhon Ly sea area.

With a history of more than 200 years, this festival is associated with the formation of Truong Lang since 1815 and was officially held at Vung Nom (Xuong Ly lagoon) in 1839. Through many restorations, especially since 2014, the festival has fully restored the traditional rituals and living space.
This conservation project not only aims to preserve traditional cultural values but also creates a foundation to exploit and promote the potential of cultural and spiritual tourism, contributing to the construction of new rural areas and sustainable socio-economic development in the locality.
On December 10, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 3994/QD-BVHTTDL to list the Xuong Ly lagoon fishing festival as a national intangible cultural heritage.
