Thousands of people in Australia took to the streets last Saturday to protest violence against women, which the government says has killed one woman every four days this year.

Five women were killed in a mass stabbing in April. Speaking after an emergency meeting to address the issue, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Australia would spend A$925.2 million (US$600 million) on a long-term financial support program for victims of domestic violence.

“This is a problem for the whole society... This is a problem for civil society, it is a problem for the media, it is a problem for all of us,” he said.

Australia will also introduce laws banning the creation and distribution of non-consensual deepfake artificial intelligence-based pornography.

Mr Albanese also announced a series of measures to control pornography on the internet and promote healthier attitudes towards women.
