Qualcomm increases presence and expands R&D in Vietnam
In the past two months, Qualcomm has increased its presence in Vietnam. The group has officially launched the Design Excellence Center in collaboration with VNPT (VQEC). This center focuses on developing integrated AI application products, from cameras, PCs, to mobile devices.
Qualcomm is also actively expanding its research and development (R&D) activities in Vietnam, especially in the fields of semiconductor chips, big data and AI at the edge (AI Edge). The group is cooperating with Viettel andFPT to develop chips for data centers and expand its supply capacity to the international market. In addition, Qualcomm is implementing a 6G research project with Viettel, aiming to commercialize products and services by 2028; cooperating with VinMotion to develop humanoid robots, expected to launch in the global market in early 2026. In addition, Qualcomm, FPT and VinFast are researching the integration of AI Agentic into car cockpits to enhance user experience.
Besides, with major partners such as CMC, FPT, Viettel and VNPT, Qualcom is also promoting AI infrastructure construction projects in Vietnam.
Key tasks in the coming time
Permanent Deputy Minister Vu Hai Quan emphasized that science, technology and innovation are the only way for Vietnam to develop quickly and sustainably.
The Ministry of Science and Technology is focusing on implementing many key tasks, including the development and revision of five draft laws, including the Law on Artificial Intelligence and the Law on High Technology (amended). These efforts aim to create a clear legal corridor to attract investment, while helping Vietnam access and master strategic technologies.
In addition, the Ministry of Science and Technology also focuses on two major focuses: training high-quality human resources (design engineers) and investing in large-scale laboratories, gradually participating in the global production value chain, especially in programming, software design and AI development at the edge (AI Edge).
Mr. Palkhiwala expressed his belief that Vietnam is qualified to become a regional technology innovation and manufacturing hub and hoped to receive support from the Ministry of Science and Technology in expanding the scale of operations.
Deputy Minister Vu Hai Quan expressed his hope that Qualcomm would continue to expand its cooperation with Vietnamese enterprises, research institutes and universities. In particular, a representative of a unit under the Ministry of Science and Technology proposed the idea of collaborating with Qualcomm to promote the production of the AI smartphone generation (a line of devices integrated with AI assistants, performing voice operations), making Vietnam the starting point in the production chain of new-generation smart devices.
The working session affirmed the determination of both sides in promoting cooperation, expecting that expanding R&D activities, developing high-quality human resources and transferring technology from leading corporations such as Qualcomm will create a new breakthrough for Vietnam's technology ecosystem.
