These days, peach blossom gardeners in Minh Tan commune (Dong Hung district, Thai Binh province) are busy preparing for Tet.
This year the weather is favorable, the peach blossoms will be beautiful
Minh Tan commune has long been known as one of the localities with large and famous peach blossom growing areas in Thai Binh province. At this time, in the gardens, people are busy taking care of flowers and ornamental plants to prepare for the year-end flower crop to welcome the Lunar New Year.
Ms. Tran Thi Khue hires 4-5 workers to take care of the peach trees in preparation for Tet.
Ms. Tran Thi Khue (46 years old, residing in Dinh Phung village), owner of a peach garden in Minh Tan commune, said that these days her family has about 4-5 people stripping peach leaves in time for the Tet tree crop. Currently, the flower buds are small, this is also the right time to strip leaves without affecting the buds on the tree.
According to Ms. Khue, this year's weather forecast is favorable, so that the peach trees will bloom in time for Tet, so after the leaves are stripped, the peach trees will be watered regularly and fertilized one month after the leaves are stripped.
Ms. Khue's family has been growing peach trees for nearly 20 years. Currently, Ms. Khue's garden has 4 sao of peach trees, of which 1 sao is for growing peach embryos, 1 sao is for peach trees that yield about 100 trees. From the time of planting the root tree to grafting and caring for it, it takes 2 years to harvest.
"Each year, after deducting all expenses, the harvest is also 100 million VND/crop. My peach garden of over 200 trees has been sold out," Ms. Khue excitedly said.
Ms. Trinh Thi Mo takes care of the peach garden in preparation for Tet.
Ms. Trinh Thi Mo (Hung Son village, Minh Tan commune) said that her family has a total of 4 peach gardens with more than 400 large peach trees to sell on the occasion of Lunar New Year this year.
Usually, Ms. Mo strips peach leaves about 2-3 times, strips leaves from large, long branches first, and then strips short branches about 10 days later so that the branches bloom evenly because young, long branches often bloom later than old branches.
"This year, the weather near Tet is cold, with little rain and no frost yet, so the peach blossoms have many buds, promising to bloom in time for Tet and bloom beautifully. However, peach blossoms are a bit rare because many gardens were damaged by storm No. 3 and have not yet recovered," Ms. Mo shared.
According to peach growers in Minh Tan commune, the process of stripping peach leaves must be done at the right time so that the tree has enough nutrients to nourish buds and bloom beautifully on the occasion of Lunar New Year. Whether the crop brings profit to the people or not depends not only on daily care of the tree, but the step of stripping leaves is also considered one of the most important steps.
Peach prices for Tet will increase slightly
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung (37 years old, Hung Son village, Minh Tan commune) shared that he has been growing ornamental peach trees for 15 years. This job is hard but also brings a stable income and is 5 times higher than growing rice.
According to Mr. Hung’s experience, to have a beautiful and valuable peach tree, the trees should be pruned 3 times a year, and 4 times in a leap year. The most important step is planting, renewing the soil and fertilizing so that the peach tree garden always has moisture.
Peach gardens have been reserved by traders to prepare for sale to the market to serve Tet needs.
"In addition, the peach leaf stripping step requires experience, the flower buds at the end of the leaf axils must be protected, each leaf must be plucked and not stripped straight from the top down because it will easily damage the flower buds," Mr. Hung revealed.
According to Mr. Hung, peach growing is often dependent on the weather, however, if you have the skill to strip the leaves, you can still succeed. Weather and human hands are factors that help the flowers bloom.
This year, many households in Minh Tan commune have seen a decrease of 100-200 peach trees due to the severe impact of Typhoon Yagi , which caused trees to fall and be flooded, resulting in 30-40% damage. Therefore, the peach market for Tet is expected to be scarcer and more expensive than last year.

As peach trees are expected to be scarcer, traders have flocked to peach gardens to place orders. Although they are only in the process of stripping leaves, many peach trees have been rented and purchased by many people to play during Tet.
"The rental price for a peach tree here is currently around 1-2 million VND/tree. If sold, the price can go up to tens of millions of VND depending on the size, shape of the tree and how many flowers bloom," said Mr. Hung.
Talking to Giao Thong Newspaper reporters, the leader of Minh Tan Commune People's Committee said that it is one of the localities in Thai Binh province with a tradition of growing flowers and ornamental plants for many years, mainly concentrated in 3 villages: Dinh Phung, Hoang Duc, Hung Son with a total area of more than 60 hectares of peach trees.
Peach blossom growing also helps people have a much better income than rice growing in other localities in the area.
