Mr. Mark Galeotti, a senior expert at the British Ministry of Defence 's Defence and Security Research Institute (RUSI), said that in the West, they believe that Ukraine's refusal to recognize part of its territory to Russia could turn a special military campaign into a permanent conflict.

“ Ukraine's borders have changed frequently over time, the current fight is to ensure that Ukraine's future borders move as little as possible ,” Mr. Galeotti said.

According to Mr. Galeotti, even Ukraine's closest allies now have significant skepticism about Kiev's ability to regain all of its territory.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy believes that the military conflict in Ukraine will continue into 2026 and beyond.

The Guardian notes that Western politicians continue to consider various ways to increase support for the Ukrainian military, including the possibility of lifting restrictions on strikes deep into Russian territory.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said there can be no just and lasting solution to the conflict in Ukraine without taking into account the country's interests.

“ A just and lasting solution cannot be achieved without Russia’s participation and without taking into account Russia’s interests. But Kiev and the West are not interested in peace. They need war ,” Ms. Zakharova said.

“ The incursion of the Ukrainian army into Kursk and President Zelensky’s proposal to strike deep into Russian territory with NATO long-range weapons are proof of this. This is a continuation of terrorism against the people of our country. We will not negotiate with terrorists ,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed.

Russia attacks many areas of Ukrainian military deployment

Russia's Defense Ministry said its warplanes had struck Ukrainian troop deployment areas on Russia's Kursk border and 13 settlements in Ukraine's Sumy region.

“ Russian aircraft, artillery and infantry attacked the areas of deployment of Ukrainian troops and weapons of the 22nd, 41st, 61st and 115th mechanized brigades, 17th tank, 80th and 95th assault brigades, 36th marine brigade and 1st national guard brigade, as well as the 103rd and 129th territorial defense brigades near the settlements of Guyevo, Kozachya Loknya, Kolmakov, Lyubimovka, Malaya Loknya, Melovoy, Malaya Obukhovka, Medvezhye, Novy Put, Novaya Sorocjina, Novoivanovka, Orlovka, Plekhovo, Russkore Porechnoye, Sverdlikovo, Pravda, Tolsty Lug, Cherkasskaya Konopelka and Yuzhny ,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
