69th anniversary of Vietnamese Doctors' Day (February 27, 1955 - February 27, 2024): REBIRTH

TP - I think about the "angels in white" with the mission to save people and if I look back at the path they have traveled, it is a journey that is no less difficult. That long, endless journey, as if there is no other way, like the dream that must be fulfilled by youth, that we must go our own way. That is the path with the final destination that they have reached or almost reached, not empty, hopeless...

Devotion to the place where you were born...

I want to tell the story of a young man wearing a white blouse, always having in mind the desire to devote himself to the place where he was born and to bridge the gap between Vietnamese youth and international friends, although the journey is not easy when he always faces fierce challenges and failures become valuable lessons.

Surpass yourself - reach out to the ocean

Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy received the Golden Globe Award in 2023

“Sorry, I have a surgery for a thyroid cancer patient. I will call you back after I finish the surgery.” - still in a hurried but warm and powerful voice, the young doctor quickly hung up after my answer and probably buried himself in surgery again. How many times has Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy been in such a hurry? And every time I hope to hear his joyful voice again after the surgeries. Head and neck cancer is a difficult and deep specialty that Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy - Deputy Head of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery (K Hospital) is passionate about and determined to pursue to the end.

Doctor Duy performs surgery on cancer patients

This young man focuses on applying new techniques in the treatment of head and neck cancer, especially thyroid cancer because this is a common cancer, with an increasing tendency to become younger. In the treatment of thyroid cancer, open surgery is the classic method of treatment. However, it often leaves scars in the anterior neck area, affecting aesthetics. Under the guidance of his teacher - Professor, Dr. Le Van Quang, Director of K Hospital, young doctor Ngo Quoc Duy has performed endoscopic thyroidectomy through the oral vestibule for many thyroid cancer patients, not only helping to increase survival time but also achieving the highest aesthetic value. Doctor Duy was also honored to be invited by Professor Angkoon Anuwong from Thailand - the world's pioneer surgeon in this technique - to report and directly participate in teaching other surgeons in the world to come and study.

Doctor, PhD Ngo Quoc Duy is one of 20 nominees for Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces 2023. Duy also won the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award 2023.

Always remembering his father's teachings that it is the will that will make success, Dr. Duy has never stopped and has constantly strived. Up to now, Duy has published many scientific articles, including articles published in prestigious international journals. On the journey to seek knowledge, with creativity and hard days in the operating room, Duy has been recognized as a global surgeon by the World Head and Neck Cancer Association. Not stopping there, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Le Van Quang, Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy is also one of the 10 people with the world's best demonstration videos on endoscopic thyroid surgery. The technique of dissecting the lateral neck lymph nodes through the vestibular-oral route in the treatment of thyroid cancer was voted one of the 10 best techniques at the International Cancer Surgery Conference of the United States - SSO 2021 and was published in the prestigious international journal Q1.

Dr. Duy shared that he really felt very lucky and honored to be a student of Professor Quang. He not only imparted knowledge and surgical techniques but also inspired his students to always strive to bring the best quality of treatment to patients. In addition, he also taught about communication, lifestyle, and how to treat people so that generations of students could constantly improve themselves.

Talking about his student, Professor Quang recognized that he is a person with logical thinking, intelligence, and on that basis, creativity. “Duy is especially diligent in learning and likes to listen to opposing opinions. This is an important factor for him to promote creativity and improve his skills. Duy is also a doctor with good foreign language skills and the ability to write international standard articles, which helps Duy access advanced medical systems in the world to expand his knowledge and grow further.”

Passion, perseverance to succeed

The journey of conquering difficulties in the profession, from when he was a student until now becoming a highly specialized surgeon has made Duy realize one thing, perseverance and initiative in everything will open the door to more opportunities. There are many difficulties in medical research, especially in the clinical field. Research is often conducted on patients, so ensuring research ethics in medicine is very important and sometimes difficult. "Always try your best, persistently pursue your passion to achieve the best results" - that is also Ngo Quoc Duy's message to young people.

Having worked with cancer patients for many years, along with many successes there have also been failures. For him, failure is to reflect, to overcome shortcomings and to increasingly perfect his skills. “If passion is the path to success, then perseverance is the vehicle that takes you there” is a motto that Duy really likes. “Without passion, it is easier to give up. When working with passion, it means we are enjoying the job, not working hard. But passion without perseverance is also difficult to succeed. This is especially true in scientific research with many difficulties and hardships,” Duy told me as if he was questioning himself.

During our conversations, I always felt that this young man with a gentle face radiated positive energy. Listening to him passionately talk about difficult cases and the fate of poor patients, it was not difficult for the person opposite to realize that besides his job responsibility, he also had love for his patients. The sharing of the young man born in 1989 made me understand that throughout his long career, Duy has always shown great gratitude to those who have helped Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy become who he is today.

“You know, K Hospital has a lot of patients, each patient, each case teaches me a lesson. They are the teachers beside the teachers in the classroom, in the hospital, helping me grow up. There are many things that are not in books, but doctors have to learn from patients.” I heard Duy’s heartfelt words, feeling full of gratitude for TEACHERS. Perhaps that can only be found in those who have vowed to devote their hearts to the heartbeat of their fellow human beings, putting all their minds into life - regenerating life.
