Russian security forces fought a gun battle all night with terrorists

"An anti-terrorist operation has been launched in the town of Karabulak, in the Republic of Ingushetia, since 7:30 p.m. on March 2," the emergency response center in Russia's Ingushetia, located in the North Caucasus region, announced early on March 3.

The operation, which covered about four streets in Karabulak, was aimed at clearing out a group of extremists “plotting to commit serious terrorist crimes” on Russian territory, according to Maxim Shevlyakov, head of the Federal Security Service (FSB) office in Ingushetia. The group has been wanted since early 2023 after an attack on police.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the suspects opened fire on police officers as they were inspecting an apartment building in the area. The gun battle continued until about 9 p.m. on March 2, followed by sporadic gunfire and grenade explosions.

Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov, leader of the Republic of Ingushetia, stressed that the situation in the town of Karabulak is still under control and the city's residents do not need to panic.

Local authorities have not recorded any civilian casualties. Ambulances have been dispatched to the scene.

Ingushetia is the smallest republic in the Russian Federation, located between North Ossetia and Chechnya, with a population of about half a million people. The Russian federal government faced many challenges from Islamist rebel groups in Ingushetia - Gagestan - Chechnya in the 2000s and early 2010s.
