Loving name of the Port City
In Vietnam, there are many places with seaports, but Hai Phong is the only locality that is affectionately called by many people with the familiar name: Port City. Therefore, the booths and display areas promoting and introducing seaports at the Hai Phong city exhibition space at the A80 exhibition are given priority in convenient locations and have high recognition.
Mr. Ha Ngoc Hoa in Dinh Cong ward ( Hanoi ) shared: "Visiting the seaport booth of Hai Phong city, I learned a lot of information about the birth and development of seaports. What impressed me most was the change in technology and exploitation capacity of seaport enterprises".
Hai Phong Port was formed in 1874 with a 250m long wharf and 6 initial warehouses and entered the song: "Hai Phong has Sau Kho wharf/ Has Cua Cam river, has cement kilns" deeply imprinted in the minds and feelings of the people of the city and the whole country.
After the liberation of Hai Phong (May 13, 1955), the Hai Phong port was taken over by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works. The task of restoring Hai Phong port operations was urgently implemented. By May 20, 1955, two foreign ships with a capacity of 10,000 DWT and 7,000 DWT successfully docked at the port.
During the resistance war against American imperialism, Hai Phong port became the only and largest sea route to receive aid from the Soviet Union and socialist countries to help the Vietnamese people with nearly 40 million tons of goods. During the period from 1965 to 1972, the port was the focus of US aircraft bombing with 300 raids. The port's self-defense force fought bravely, directly shooting down 3 planes and together with the army unit shooting down 30 others; destroying 308 bombs and mines, clearing 17 waterways on 50 km of river and sea routes to ensure safety for ships passing through.
Nearly 40 years of implementing the renovation policy and the policy of going to sea, seaport enterprises have moved to Chua Ve, Dinh Vu, Nam Dinh Vu... The "giraffe" cranes of the past have now been replaced by gantry cranes and automatic cranes.

Global reach
From the old Sau Kho wharf, the city's seaport system today has 5 main wharf areas with 52 ports and 98 wharves over 14 km long. Of which, the most prominent is Hai Phong International Gateway Port in Lach Huyen, which is capable of receiving container ships up to over 200,000 DWT.
In 2025, Hai Phong seaport officially marked a strong turning point when entering the era of reaching out to the sea, bustling with activities when 6 ports in Lach Huyen wharf area officially opened.
These are all deep ports with modern loading and unloading equipment, capable of receiving the world’s largest container ships. From Lach Huyen, direct service routes to Europe and North America are available without needing to transit at ports in China, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.
MSC Shipping Line - the world's largest container shipping line cooperates with Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company through Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) in a joint venture to exploit berths 3 and 4, Lach Huyen area. Mr. Benoit De Quillacq, General Director of MSC Vietnam Co., Ltd. once affirmed: The company chose Hai Phong city and Hai Phong Port not only because of its strategic geographical location - an important trade gateway of Northern Vietnam, but also because of its strong development potential, the commitment of the local government and the professional operating capacity of its partners here.
This cooperation has resulted in the creation of a modern infrastructure with a 750m wharf, capable of receiving long-haul container ships. This is an important step forward, contributing to improving the region's connectivity with the global market.

Mr. Robert Maersk Uggla, Chairman of APMoller Holding (APM Holding) and Chairman of Maersk, a member of APM Holding, a strategic partner of Hateco Group in implementing the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT) project, assessed HHIT as the most modern and largest deep-water port in Northern Vietnam, which will support businesses, create jobs and connect Vietnam with the world. With future opportunities, the company signed a memorandum of cooperation with Hateco Group to establish a strategic partnership in the field of ports and logistics...
Hai Phong seaport, from the old Cam River wharf, now stretches out to the open sea. The port is now capable of receiving the world's largest container ship, becoming a port cluster with the busiest volume of ships in the world.
Recently, Hai Phong seaport entered the top 30 seaports in the world and ranked 2nd in Vietnam in terms of container throughput in 2024 with a volume of 7.1 million TEU. This result contributed to bringing Vietnam's seaport to rank 6th in the list of countries with seaports handling large volumes of containers in the world.
