Journey of Compassion

In a small house in Cluster 3 - Lien Ha, O Dien commune, Party Cell Secretary, Head of the Front Work Committee of Cluster 3 - Lien Ha Cao Van Cuong is busy with his familiar community work. Recalling the first time he donated blood in 2008, Cuong still has the same eager emotions of youth. At that time, he was an active member of the commune's Youth Union movement and was also working as a police officer. "When the voluntary blood donation movement was launched, I heard the propaganda and found it very meaningful. When I went to the medical examination and met the conditions, I was very happy because I could fulfill my wish to help people," Cuong said.
After that first time, every time the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion coordinated with the Red Cross Society of Dan Phuong district (before implementing the 2-level local government model 7-2025) to launch a blood donation campaign in the district, Mr. Cuong registered again. Some years, he donated 3-4 times, on average, every quarter, he spent a session to "donate a part of his blood".
Up to now, he has donated blood 30 times, an impressive and proud number. “At first, some people said that donating so much was not enough. But I understand that donating blood is not harmful, but also helps with regular health check-ups. I read many documents and found that this is a good thing for both the body and the community. Nearly 20 years later, I still feel healthy and mentally comfortable,” he shared.
Behind the simple appearance of that grassroots cadre is a warm heart, full of compassion. For Mr. Cuong, donating blood has become a part of life, a good habit like exercising or eating moderately every day. “If you want to donate blood for a long time, you have to stay healthy. I don’t smoke, limit alcohol, go to bed early, eat well and exercise regularly. Every time I donate blood, I feel healthier and more relaxed,” he said.
His parents, wife and children all support him, considering it a good deed. “I give to help others, without expecting anything in return. Just thinking about the patients who receive timely blood transfusions, I feel that everything I do is worthwhile,” he confided.
Spreading the spirit of charity in the community

Not stopping at personal actions, Mr. Cuong is also the nucleus spreading the spirit of charity in the community. In his position as Party Cell Secretary, Head of the Front Work Committee of Cluster 3 - Lien Ha, he always includes the content of voluntary blood donation in activities, propaganda to each residential group, each household...
From that persistent movement, many people in the residential area have changed their awareness. The Zalo group that gathers blood donors in the Lien Ha area where he lives currently has more than 100 members who regularly register to donate blood. Whenever there is a program, Mr. Cuong and the village leaders and the Red Cross send messages to notify and compile a list to participate together. "There was a time when the movement had not yet reached the commune, I proactively went to the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to donate. As long as my health is guaranteed, I am ready to go at any time," he said.
Not only did he inspire his friends and colleagues, he also encouraged his whole family to join in. “At first, my wife was afraid, worried that donating blood would make her weak. But then she saw that I was healthy and understood the humane meaning of this work, so she agreed. Now we both donate blood and have fun together,” he smiled gently. To date, his wife has donated blood twice – drops of loving blood extended from her husband’s act of kindness.
With nearly twenty years of perseverance in the voluntary blood donation movement, Mr. Cao Van Cuong is not only a shining example in Cluster 3 - Lien Ha but also the pride of O Dien commune. On October 10, at the Hanoi City Patriotic Emulation Congress for the period 2025-2030, he was honored to receive the title "Good person, good deed" from the Chairman of the City People's Committee - this is a worthy reward for Mr. Cao Van Cuong's kindness and persistent contributions to the community.
