Apple has confirmed that it will stop supporting its Clips app, a video editing tool that was launched in 2017, and will remove it from the App Store starting October 10, 2025. The move marks the end of one of Apple's least-noticed efforts in the short-form video creation space.

According to Apple's support page, Clips will no longer be available for new downloads, but those who have previously installed the app will still be able to continue using it on current or older versions of iOS and iPadOS. Existing users can also re-download the app from their Apple ID account if needed.
Apple recommends users back up videos created with Clips to their photo library so they can continue to view and edit them in other apps like Photos or iMovie. The company notes that the lack of updates will make Clips less usable over time due to changes in the operating system.

Chatbots can't save Apple in the AI era
Launched in 2017, Clips was once seen as Apple's answer to Snapchat and Instagram Stories, allowing users to create short videos by combining photos, adding music, emojis, captions and filters. However, the app never gained the same traction as competing social media platforms.
Tech experts at the time saw Clips as a way for Apple to showcase its software and hardware capabilities, rather than a long-term strategic product. After an initial period of many new feature updates, in recent years the app has only received minor bug fixes, showing a gradual decrease in investment by Apple.
On Reddit, many Apple users expressed no surprise at the decision, saying they rarely used or had never even heard of Clips. Meanwhile, the technology community said that the emergence of AI video creation tools like OpenAI's Sora - which has now surpassed 1 million downloads - has made traditional video editing applications obsolete.
Apple's "death" of Clips is seen as a step to pave the way for the era of AI content creation, as the technology company is focusing many resources on new AI features on iPhone and iPad in the near future.
