Poland denies involvement in gas pipeline explosions

Polish officials insist that Poland had nothing to do with the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 explosions and that linking Poland to these events is unfounded.

According to Sputniknews, on June 11, the spokesman for Poland's minister coordinating special services, Mr. Stanislaw Zaryn, affirmed that Poland was not involved in the explosions at the two Nord Stream gas pipelines from Russia to Europe.

“Poland had nothing to do with the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 explosions. Linking Poland to these events is unfounded,” Mr Zaryn wrote in a Twitter post.

In September 2022, several explosions occurred on the Nord Stream gas pipeline system in the Baltic Sea. Experts later discovered four leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.

Of these, two are located within Sweden's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and two are located within Denmark's EEZ. Western countries and Russia have blamed each other for the explosions.

However, investigations conducted by the Swedish, Danish and German authorities have so far failed to hold any country or entity responsible, despite claiming that this was a "deliberate" act.

On March 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that a Gazprom ship discovered evidence of what could be another explosive device on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline about 30km from where the previous sabotage incident occurred.

Previously, Gazprom received an invitation from the Danish government to participate in the investigation at the site of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline explosions.

However, the Gazprom ship did not stop at the site of the explosion but went further along the pipeline, where it discovered a small pile at the joint - the weakest point of the pipeline.

Previous explosions have occurred in similar locations. Experts believe that these could be antennas to receive signals to trigger explosive devices placed under the pipeline system.

On March 27, Russia failed to persuade the United Nations Security Council to conduct an independent investigation into the September 2022 explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, connecting Russia and Germany, carrying gas across the Baltic Sea.

According to the voting results, only Russia, China and Brazil voted in favor of the draft resolution drafted by Russia, while the remaining 12 council members abstained.

On the same day, March 27, Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Birichevsky said that Moscow could demand compensation for damages caused by the explosions.

The Kremlin believes that all shareholders are responsible for deciding whether to suspend the Nord Stream pipeline.

Swedish prosecutors said on April 6 that it was difficult to determine who was behind explosions that damaged Nord Stream gas pipelines last year.

Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said there were various reports and information surrounding the sabotage of the gas pipelines. However, these outside speculations would not affect the investigation, which was based on facts and information gathered through analysis, on-site investigations and cooperation with countries.

On May 21, the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung reported that at least two Ukrainians may have participated in the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. However, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office did not comment on the matter on May 22 when asked about the matter.

On May 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it had summoned the ambassadors of Germany, Sweden and Denmark to protest what Moscow called "complete inefficiency" in the investigation into the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that all three countries "tried to delay" the investigation efforts and "tried to conceal the perpetrators" behind the explosions. Moscow also expressed "dissatisfaction" with the parties' refusal to let Russia participate in this investigation.

Director of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Bruno Kahl said that currently no intelligence agency can name the people who carried out the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline./.
