Dispelling myths about skin care and anti-aging

In skin care and anti-aging, there are many dos and don'ts, making the line between reality and word of mouth quite blurry, making it difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood.

American dermatologist Joshua Zeichner has pointed out eight common misconceptions that many of his patients believe, and at the same time given practical recommendations for skin care and anti-aging, according to Real Simple magazine.

According to Dr. Zeichner, the notion that only surgery can improve sagging skin is incorrect.

Collagen is the foundation of skin structure and over time, collagen production slows down, especially after the age of 30. In addition, exposure to ultraviolet rays (or UV rays) will destroy the skin structure.

Some products containing retinol can stimulate collagen regeneration, helping to improve firmness without the need for "surgical" intervention.

The notion that the skin around the eyes is too sensitive to retinol is also not entirely true. He said there are now special formulas for this area that help limit irritation while still improving early wrinkles.

Another misconception is that drinking eight glasses of water a day will help with dry skin. In fact, dry skin is more related to genetics, environment, and personal care products. Therefore, doctors recommend choosing a moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid to directly hydrate the skin.

Expensive products don’t always work better. Many affordable serums contain active ingredients like vitamin C, which can brighten skin and fade dark spots.

He also emphasized that hot water does not “open” pores and cold water does not “close” pores as many believe. Proper cleansing with a product containing salicylic acid is the key to reducing excess oil and making pores less visible.

With dark spots, many people worry that fading creams can make their skin look pale. However, new formulas only target the abnormal areas, not change the overall skin tone.

Another misconception is that sunscreen is only needed when going to the beach. Doctors warn that UV rays can penetrate glass and accumulate over time, so daily sunscreen application is necessary.

Finally, acne doesn’t necessarily go away with adulthood. More and more women over 25 are experiencing breakouts due to hormones, diet, and stress. In this case, adapalene—an over-the-counter retinoid—controls acne while improving wrinkles.

The above recommendations show that instead of following rumors, consumers can effectively care for their skin with affordable, science- based products.
