60 surgeries after injecting floating filler

Ms. NHN (35 years old, living in An Giang province) was pushed in a wheelchair by relatives to the emergency room at a hospital in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, in a state of deformed thigh, exposed muscle bundles, and oozing foul-smelling pus.

Ms. N. told the doctor that more than 7 years ago, because she wanted to quickly improve her figure, she bought dozens of types of fillers advertised as "European collagen" and "wherever you inject, there you are" on social networks.

She asked friends to come to her home to inject her, and even injected herself. Over time, the woman became more and more addicted to filler injections, with the intervals between injections becoming shorter and shorter, and the amount of filler injected each time increasing.

About 6 years ago, Ms. N. was stranded in Dubai while traveling due to the Covid-19 pandemic. At this time, her body began to swell and hurt all over, with many abscesses appearing, oozing yellow fluid and foul-smelling pus.

Doctors in Dubai diagnosed Ms. N. with a strange virus and had to undergo emergency surgery to "remove the virus from her body." Later, it was determined that the cause of the patient's complications was due to the unknown amount of filler that she had previously injected.

In the following days, Ms. N. entered a long series of days of obsession, fear and despair, with more than 60 major and minor surgeries to treat complications. Each time, her body was incised, drained, cleaned, stitched... but the condition was still not resolved.

The patient's body was covered with scars, bumps and dents. There were times when Ms. N. was psychologically panicked, lost control of her behavior, and talked nonsense at night. For the past month, an abscess appeared on the woman's right thigh, oozing yellow fluid.

She went to a hospital to have an open surgery to remove the abscess, but her condition worsened. In pain and despair, she decided to seek help from Dr. Nguyen Phan Tu Dung at night.

The dire consequences of each wrong injection

"In hundreds of cases of complications caused by fillers that I have operated on, I have never seen such a horrifying necrosis. The thigh was completely opened, all the muscle mass was exposed, and the filler inside was tightly attached to every muscle tissue of the patient," Dr. Tu Dung described the horrifying complication on the patient's thigh.

During the night, Dr. Tu Dung ordered the patient to be hospitalized, examined and tested, and assessed his physical condition for emergency surgery.

The surgery was performed at exactly 6:00 a.m., under the direction of the Hospital General Director and a team of doctors from many specialties.

During the surgery, doctors discovered that there was a lot of filler in the patient's body, firmly adhering to and penetrating every muscle tissue, even destroying the bone. Notably, the patient's thigh muscles were almost paralyzed, not responding to any impact.

After 5 hours, the team completed the life-threatening surgery, collecting nearly 4 liters of pus and necrotic tissue.

Doctors analyze that nowadays many people see filler injection as a simple, quick beauty method, forgetting that it is a procedure that directly invades the body.

In particular, injecting floating fillers of unknown origin in large quantities into the buttocks, thighs, chest... can cause serious consequences. "Each injection, if done wrong, not only leaves scars, but can also permanently change vital functions or parts of the body," Dr. Tu Dung analyzed.

Talking to Dan Tri reporter, Master, Specialist Doctor 2 Dinh Phuong Dong, Department of Burns and Cosmetic Surgery, Trung Vuong Hospital (HCMC) shared that currently there is a situation where people listen to advertisements from unlicensed cosmetic facilities or from people without expertise to perform filler injections.

In fact, many cases of improper facial filler injections have caused blindness complications, because the filler goes directly into the blood vessels, causing blockage of the central retinal artery.

Dr. Dong confirmed that fillers that have penetrated into the subcutaneous tissues cannot be completely removed, and after a period of treatment, complications will occur. Therefore, patients must undergo multiple surgeries, with prolonged treatment time and high treatment costs.

Therefore, people who intend to inject fillers for beauty purposes should go to legal medical facilities with qualified medical staff who have been trained in this technique.
