On September 22, a group of 11 leading economists , including Nobel Prize winners Joseph Stiglitz and Daron Acemoglu, issued a joint statement warning of the risk of the mainstream media system "collapsing" and calling on governments to help these media outlets survive.
After detailing the problems arising from job losses, falling revenues and the threat of artificial intelligence (AI) to journalism, economists called on governments to play a bigger role in investing in and shaping the media ecosystem.
A group of economists from leading universities in the UK and the US say media companies are seeing their traditional advertising model of staying afloat significantly impacted since the advent of the internet.
Online platforms like Meta and Google account for the majority of online advertising revenue, while new AI chatbots like Chat GPT or Google's Gemini significantly reduce the number of people visiting mainstream media companies' websites to find information.
Experts concluded that governments need to act to prevent the collapse of mainstream media as this would have serious economic and social consequences./.
