Journalism faces growing threat from AI

Tech giants like Google are increasingly integrating the latest technology into their platforms to create their own content.

Many fear this will prevent millions of internet users from accessing trustworthy news sites. The traffic cut will make it much harder for news organizations to maintain the budgets they need to produce investigative journalism and check misinformation.

The report said the threat from AI-generated content would not only “harm” newspapers’ business models but also “further degrade” the public’s ability to access accurate information online.

New research suggests the biggest public concern about AI technology is its role in promoting fake news online.

The report found that three-quarters of UK MPs questioned believe trustworthy journalism will be “very important” in mitigating this risk ahead of next year’s US general election.

Nearly all editors said the risk to the public from AI-generated content was “greater than ever,” according to a survey conducted by the UK News Media Association (NMA) and Newsworks.

“As this new technology enhances the ability of bad actors to create and distribute disinformation, it is more important than ever for the public to have full and unfettered access to reliable sources of information,” said NMA chief executive Owen Meredith.
