The DMA was fully implemented in March 2024 to make the digital sector in the 27 member states fairer and more open. However, Apple has repeatedly opposed the EU law.
In a 25-page official letter to the European Commission (EC), Apple argued that the EU should abolish the DMA and implement a legal instrument more suitable for the above purpose. The company argued that the DMA's requirements would lead to some risks as Europeans could download app stores that compete with Apple's App Store. The US technology giant said that the number of user complaints about the DMA-related changes has been increasing, but did not provide specific figures.
According to Apple, the DMA has led to a worse user experience in the EU, exposed them to new risks, and disrupted the way Apple products work. Apple also argued that EU law has forced it to delay the launch of new features in the bloc's markets. For example, Apple has yet to roll out the "live translation" feature on AirPods, which allows users to select a language to hear a live translation through the headphones. The technology was launched in the US this September, but Apple said it had to do more technical work to ensure the privacy of users in the EU.
Apple has urged the EU to reform the entire DMA if it does not abolish it, and has proposed that an independent EU body, rather than the European Commission, should enforce the law. The US tech company submitted the document as the EU concluded its initial consultation to assess the law's effectiveness.
