On October 17, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health informed that thanks to the addition of a neurologist from People's Hospital 115 with the assigned task of deploying a stroke unit at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, the first stroke patient was successfully treated.
The patient was Mr. TVK (34 years old), who had a dull headache in the right temple for several days. At 7:30 a.m. on October 17, he suddenly fell, had weakness in his left arm and leg, and had a crooked mouth. He was taken to the emergency room of the Con Dao Military Medical Center.
Suspecting that the patient had a stroke in the right hemisphere of the brain in the first hour, Dr. Huynh Minh Triet - Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases, People's Hospital 115 - ordered a CT scan of the patient's brain.
At 8:10 am, while waiting for CT scan, the patient's condition worsened with symptoms of clear left central facial paralysis, slurred speech, muscle strength in the left arm 1/5, and the left leg 3/5...
At 8:30, the results of the brain CT scan were urgently sent via the PACS system to People's Hospital 115 for consultation with cerebrovascular pathology experts including Associate Professor Nguyen Huy Thang (Head of the Department of Cerebrovascular Pathology), Doctor Pham Nguyen Binh (Deputy Head of the Department). The experts recorded that the brain CT scan did not show intracranial hemorrhage.
The doctors unanimously diagnosed the patient with a right hemisphere cerebral infarction in the first hour and decided to treat the patient with intravenous thrombolytic drugs. Following the consultation instructions, the team quickly implemented treatment with thrombolytic drugs that People's Hospital 115 had provided to the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.
During the drug infusion, the patient's symptoms significantly improved: alert, good contact, left arm muscle strength 3/5, left leg strength 4/5. At the end of the drug infusion, the patient improved almost completely, with only mild left VII paralysis, left arm and leg muscle strength 5/5.
The intravenous thrombolysis treatment for a patient with acute cerebral infarction at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center was successful, helping the patient improve dramatically (NIHSS reduced from 12 to 1 point).
This success demonstrates the outstanding effectiveness of the remote consultation system and the smooth coordination between experts from People's Hospital 115 and the team of rotating doctors on the island, helping Con Dao people access treatment during the "golden hour".
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts of People's Hospital 115 in deploying a stroke unit in Con Dao - an important step in the specialist rotation program.
