Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health informed about the special case "for the first time" in Con Dao

(Dan Tri) - On the afternoon of October 17, Associate Professor Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, informed Dan Tri reporters about the first successful rescue of a stroke patient in Con Dao.

That is the case of patient TVK (34 years old). The medical history shows that 2 days ago, the patient had a dull headache in the right temple area. On the morning of October 17, he suddenly fell, had weakness in the left limbs, and had a crooked mouth, so he was taken to the Emergency Department of the Con Dao Military Medical Center.

With the above symptoms, Dr. Huynh Minh Triet, Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases, People's Hospital 115 (HCMC) - who is rotating to work in Con Dao special zone - ordered the patient to have a CT scan of the brain.

While waiting for the scan, the patient's condition worsened with symptoms of left central facial paralysis, slurred speech, left arm muscle strength only 1/5, and NIHSS score (cerebral infarction assessment) increased from 2 points to 12 points.

At 8:30 a.m., the CT scan results were sent to People's Hospital 115 for consultation with experts from the Cerebrovascular Disease Department, recording no intracranial hemorrhage.

The patient's condition improved and he quickly overcame the critical stage after being treated with thrombolytic therapy (Photo: SYT).

The patient was unanimously diagnosed with a right-hemispheric ischemic stroke in the first hour, with an indication for emergency intravenous thrombolysis (rTPA). Based on the consultation of experts, doctors from People's Hospital 115 and Binh Dan Hospital treated the patient with thrombolysis.

Immediately during the drug infusion, the patient's symptoms improved significantly, he was alert, had good contact, and his limb strength gradually recovered.

At the end of the drug infusion, the patient improved almost completely, with only mild left-sided paralysis, left limb muscle strength reaching 5/5, and the NIHSS score decreasing from 6 points to 1 point.

"The first intravenous thrombolysis intervention for a patient with acute cerebral infarction at the medical center in Con Dao was a great success.

Thereby, affirming the outstanding effectiveness of the application of the remote consultation system and the close and timely professional coordination between experts and specialized doctors on rotation for the second phase, helping patients on remote islands to successfully access "golden hour" treatment", the leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health commented.

Previously, on October 2-3, Phu Quoc Medical Center also received 2 cases of acute cerebral infarction. Thanks to the coordination of Cho Ray Hospital, which is directly supporting in Phu Quoc special zone, the patients have overcome the critical stage.

Cho Ray Hospital has proposed to Phu Quoc Medical Center a plan to establish a center for stroke treatment and vascular intervention, to optimize intervention strategies for acute stroke and cardiovascular disease treatment for people.

"Building a stroke center in Phu Quoc is an urgent matter to ensure better health care for people and tourists coming to the special zone," said the leader of Cho Ray Hospital.
