With new leadership, Marriott determined to penetrate deeper into Vietnam hotel market

Marriott International has just officially announced the expansion of the role of Mr. Duke Nam, who was previously Regional Vice President, in charge of managing and operating the Korean and Philippine markets - now concurrently in charge of the Vietnamese market.

Mr. Duke Nam - a veteran with 38 years of experience, highly appreciated in the hotel management industry will continue his impressive career journey by taking on a new market.

The expansion of the management scope to this new market also officially marks another chapter in the 38-year career of hotel management and operation of this veteran vice president.

Duke Nam is a Korean national, educated in Switzerland and the UK, who has spent more than 25 years with Marriott International’s portfolio of brands, including senior leadership roles across Asia Pacific . Following successful stints as general manager of Westin and St. Regis hotels in Taipei, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, he served as Managing Director of West, Central and South China for several years, overseeing the operations of numerous hotels and resorts across these rapidly growing regions.

In 2014, he was promoted to the role of Executive Vice President of Southern China and Hainan for Starwood Hotels & Resorts at the time. After transferring to Marriott International, Duke was appointed Vice President of Southern China in 2016. In 2018, he returned to Korea to take on the role of Regional Vice President in charge of the market. This position was later expanded to include the Philippines market.

“Duke is one of the region’s most renowned and respected hospitality professionals with a distinguished track record in his nearly four-decade career. He has worked and achieved many career heights, with many of his achievements being credited with explosive growth in Asia and some of the region’s most important markets, including China. This makes him the perfect choice for the senior leadership role to lead the team to continue Marriott’s continued growth in Vietnam,” said Neeraj Govil, Managing Director, Asia Pacific , excluding China, Marriott International.

Duke’s appointment and expansion of his influence in the new role comes at a pivotal time, as Marriott International embarks on a deep growth strategy in Vietnam, where the group currently operates 23 properties. By the end of 2024, Marriott International expects to expand the number of hotels and resorts in the S-shaped country with more than 50 projects under development. This expansion will also see the launch of several new brands in the country, including the Westin brand, which has just officially “launched” with The Westin Resort & Spa Cam Ranh. Brands expected to launch soon in the future include The Ritz-Carlton, Marriott Executive Apartments...

Duke Nam is responsible for the management and operations of the Korea, Philippines and Vietnam markets from his headquarters in Seoul, Korea. His extensive experience, outstanding leadership skills and strong operational track record make him uniquely qualified to lead Marriott into an exciting new era in the region. In this expanded role, Duke Nam will be responsible for the operations of more than 70 properties across Marriott International’s 16 brands in Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam.
