Tilapia has been positioned to become a strategic product in Vietnam's seafood exports. According to experts, tilapia has long been a very important seafood product with great export potential, along with shrimp and tra fish.

The Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control believes that Vietnam has great strengths to develop tilapia into a strategic product because tilapia is an adaptable species, grows quickly, and is suitable for many freshwater and brackish water ecosystems. In terms of consumption, tilapia is a product that meets the needs of many different market segments. Currently, the country has 40,000 hectares of specialized tilapia farming, with an output of about 300,000 tons/year. Notably, tilapia exports have increased dramatically, from 23 million USD in the whole year of 2024 to more than 63 million USD in just 8 months of 2025. The fisheries industry aims to increase tilapia output to 400,000 tons by 2030, with an export turnover of about 100 million USD, forming a closed production - processing - consumption chain and building a national brand for Vietnamese tilapia.
