Việt NamViệt Nam08/12/2023

Taking advantage of the sunny weather, farmers in Ha Tinh are focusing on taking care of their crops and continuing to plant winter crops according to the crop schedule, bringing with them the hope of a bumper crop.

According to records, the 2023 winter crop production situation in Ha Tinh is facing many difficulties due to unfavorable weather. Farmers in many localities have suffered large crop losses due to rain and floods. Therefore, at this stage, localities are focusing on speeding up the winter crop production progress as planned.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong (Thach Lien commune, Thach Ha) takes care of 4 sao of cauliflower and cabbage.

From early morning, farmers in the concentrated vegetable production area of Tho village (Thach Lien commune, Thach Ha) went to the fields to take care of their crops. The rains of the past few days have left the fields waterlogged, so people had to quickly drain the water, make beds and raise the roots; and add manure to increase the plants' resistance.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong (Tho village, Thach Lien commune) shared: “This year, winter crop production is very difficult. My family grows 4 sao of cabbage and cauliflower. On days of heavy rain, we have to go to the fields to drain the water to avoid the plants being soaked in water for a long time, which can easily cause mold and root rot. Now the weather is sunny, my husband and I quickly went to the fields to re-mound the beds, add manure and monitor the spraying of pesticides to prevent mold, pests and diseases that can damage the plants.”

On this occasion, in addition to taking care of the area of crops such as cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber..., farmers in the concentrated vegetable production area of Tho village also actively weed, plow the land, and make beds to plant kohlrabi, in time to serve the Lunar New Year market.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ty (Tho village, Thach Lien commune) said: “To save costs, instead of buying seedlings in the market, my family bought seeds to sow. After 15 days, the seeds germinated and grew well. Currently, the family mobilized labor to work 4 sao of land, sowing kohlrabi to keep up with the crop schedule. If we take care of them according to techniques, proactively prevent pests and diseases, and have favorable weather, the plants will yield high yields, expected to earn over 15 million VND/sao.”

Farmers in Thach Lien commune (Thach Ha) prepare the land to plant kohlrabi in time to serve the Tet market.

Thach Lien is a perennial vegetable growing area of Thach Ha district. Mr. Tran Van Huong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Lien commune said: "In the 2023 winter crop, the whole commune will produce 35 hectares, of which more than 6 hectares belong to 3 production areas concentrated in Tho and Khang villages. This year, there was a lot of rain and wet soil, so the commune has only completed 70% of the area. The local government is urging people to continue to stick to the fields, "cover" the cultivated land area and guide measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases on crops, ensuring high yields".

In addition to Thach Lien, the remaining communes of Thach Ha district are currently speeding up to "cover" the winter crop area of 90 hectares of corn for grain, 740 hectares of various vegetables and 168 hectares of sweet potatoes.

In Huong Khe district, the main crops of the winter crop are corn and various vegetables. Specifically, the locality aims to plant 1,400 hectares of corn for grain, 600 hectares of biomass corn, 350 hectares of various vegetables and 100 hectares of sweet potatoes and has so far completed more than 60% of the production area.

Mr. Nguyen Tri Dong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Huong Khe district said: "This year, the prolonged rain and floods have made winter crop production very unfavorable. Farmers in many communes of Huong Khe district have had to plant seeds 2-3 times, which is costly. Before the crop season, the district has implemented a seed support policy and is currently focusing on urging and encouraging farmers to actively stick to the fields, plant seeds according to the crop schedule, ensuring food for daily life and livestock farming."

In the 2023 winter crop, the whole province will sow 4,259 hectares of grain corn and 1,649 hectares of biomass corn.

According to the plan, Cam Xuyen district produces 155 hectares of corn for grain, 70 hectares of biomass corn, 847 hectares of various vegetables and 200 hectares of sweet potatoes in the winter crop. According to records, recent heavy rains have damaged crop areas. Up to now, the locality is focusing on restoring production and continuing to sow seeds, ensuring product supply for the Tet market. Notably, Cam Xuyen has formed specialized production areas in the direction of commodities such as bitter melon in Cam Trung commune, potatoes in Cam Vinh commune, vegetables - tubers - fruits on Yen Hoa sandy soil... Thereby gradually changing production practices for people and increasing value per unit area.

According to Mr. Phan Van Huan - Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Ha Tinh: Winter crop production in Ha Tinh depends heavily on the weather and is highly risky; especially the winter crop is often affected by rain and floods at the beginning of the season and severe cold at the end of the season. Therefore, localities need to closely follow production practices and proactively plan production in the face of complex weather developments.

Recently, unfavorable weather and heavy rain have negatively affected the growth and development of crops, and many localities have even had to reorganize production. To avoid damage to crops that have been planted, people need to proactively widen drainage ditches, loosen and remove the crust when flooded to allow the soil to breathe, providing oxygen to the roots; make high beds, mounds of land, and fertilize (prioritize organic fertilizers) to increase nutrition and resistance for plants. In case plants are affected by pests after rain, farmers need to use pesticides according to the instructions of the professional sector...
