On the afternoon of October 7, the leader of the Department of Industry and Trade of Lang Son province confirmed that a section of the dam of Bac Khe 1 hydropower plant broke at around 1 p.m. the same day due to the huge water pressure.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the initial breach was about 1 meter wide. However, because this is an earthen dam, the breach is at risk of continuing to spread under the pressure of the water flow.
After the incident, water from the reservoir flowed downstream, affecting some residential areas in Tan Tien commune. Fortunately, having anticipated the risk from the heavy rain, the local authorities had evacuated households in the dangerous area to safety days before.
Currently, authorities are urgently deploying on-site response plans, while continuing to inform the situation and being ready to evacuate areas at risk of new impacts.
The leader of Lang Son Department of Industry and Trade said: "Due to the impact of the recent heavy rains, many households in the downstream area have been evacuated to safe places. Therefore, there have been no casualties so far. We are currently continuing to check other residential areas to ensure maximum safety."
