Recently, due to the impact of storm No. 11, heavy rains over a wide area in the northern mountainous provinces caused serious flooding in Thai Nguyen province. High floods caused severe damage to the infrastructure, teaching equipment, and landscape of many schools, affecting the organization of teaching and learning.

Sharing with VietNamNet, Mr. Tran Van Hung, Principal of Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted, said that the flood caused the school to be submerged from October 7 and 8, with water levels reaching about 2 meters high.

After the water receded, the school cleaned up from then until late evening on October 12. Mr. Hung said that at 5 p.m. on October 12, the school continued to clear mud from the school. In addition to human resources, the school had to hire 3 bulldozers, 3 mud trucks, and 1 truck to transport soil to deal with the consequences.

Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted's yard was flooded with mud after the flood.

Speaking with VietNamNet , Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen, said that up to now, the whole province is very active, trying to bring students back to school as soon as possible.

“Out of more than 160 educational institutions in the province affected, up to now, 50 schools have brought students back to normal study, from October 10. The rest will try to resume teaching and learning from October 13, using appropriate teaching methods (can be in-person, online, in-person combined with online),,” said the leader of the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training.

Mr. Tuan said that educational institutions can combine many suitable and flexible forms of organization. “For preschool level, there will be meals on weekdays. But for facilities that cannot provide meals due to hygiene conditions, water sources, food, etc., which are not guaranteed to be cooked centrally, they can flexibly use appropriate forms. For example, parents can bring lunch to their children when they come to school. Through appropriate forms, we try to overcome this problem to bring children back to school as soon as possible,” Mr. Tuan shared.

The football field was covered with a thick layer of mud.

Mr. Dam Ngoc Hung, Head of Organization and Administration Department, Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training, added that in recent days, including Saturdays and Sundays, schools in the area have increased cleaning as much as possible.

“The main difficulty for schools is the lack of tap water to clean up mud inside rooms and classrooms. However, up to now, schools have basically finished cleaning up the aftermath of the flood; no school has announced that it will be closed tomorrow, October 13. The spirit of urgency has been accelerated, and schools that were not flooded have also come to support flooded schools in cleaning up. Basically, schools will organize in-person classes, however, there will also be online options for students who cannot go to school,” Mr. Hung said.

Mr. Hung said that the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training also sent a document to educational institutions in the area to urgently overcome the consequences of the flood to organize teaching and learning.

Accordingly, the Department of Education and Training said that in the education sector, there has been a loss of life, especially the system of facilities, teaching equipment, and environmental landscape of many educational institutions has been severely damaged, affecting the organization of teaching and learning.

To overcome the consequences of floods and promptly organize teaching and learning according to plan, the Department of Education and Training requests the People's Committees of communes/wards and educational institutions in the province to mobilize all forces and resources to organize flood recovery; strive by October 13, educational institutions to organize teaching and learning again in appropriate forms (in person, online, in person combined with online) on the principle of ensuring absolute safety for students, staff, teachers and employees.
