Thai Nguyen: Returning a bag of gold worth nearly 150 million VND found in floodwaters

On his way home through floodwaters, Mr. La Trung Kien, group 59, Phan Dinh Phung ward, got a woman's handbag caught on his leg. Removing the bag to continue walking, Mr. Kien discovered that the bag contained a lot of cash and gold, so he brought it to the police station to help find the owner.

Captain Nguyen Van Khanh, an officer of Phan Dinh Phung Ward Police, said: At around 9:00 a.m. on October 11, Mr. Kien brought a women's handbag to the Ward Police headquarters, explaining that he had picked it up in floodwaters and wanted help finding the owner.

During the inspection, the police and Mr. Kien counted in the bag more than 60 million VND in cash, 6 gold rings (equivalent to 6 taels of gold) and a health insurance card. The total value of money and gold was nearly 150 million VND.

From the information on the insurance card, the ward police looked up the population data and quickly identified the owner as Ms. D.TNT, group 91, Phan Dinh Phung ward. When invited, Ms. T. confirmed that it was her lost property and had previously reported the loss.

Recounting the story, Mr. Kien said: I was on a business trip to Na Ri and was stuck for 2 days because of the storm. Hearing that my house was flooded, I was anxious to find a way to return. At around 9am on October 8, when I waded across Phu Lien Street, the bag got stuck on my leg. At first, I only intended to take it off to continue walking, but I opened it to see. Seeing that there was too much money, I immediately wrapped it up and brought it back, waiting for the water to recede before finding a way to return it.

Mr. Kien’s house was deeply flooded, the water rose to the second floor. The property in the house, including two cars, furniture, and store supplies, were all severely damaged, estimated at around 1 billion VND. However, amidst the loss, he still kept the bag intact, carefully preserving it throughout many days of flooding.

“When I got home, I didn’t touch the money or gold, just looked at the papers to find the person to return it to. I thought the person who lost it must be suffering a lot, I just hope to find them soon,” Kien shared.

The person who dropped the bag - Ms. D.TNT is still emotional: On the evening of October 7, I waded through the water to my parents' house to bring supplies. It was dark and the water was deep, so my bag slipped out without me noticing. When I discovered it, I went back to look for it but it was hopeless. I thought it was definitely lost. When the police called to inform me that someone had picked it up, I was both happy and in disbelief. I am truly grateful to Mr. Kien.

During the days of heavy rain and floods that caused thousands of households in Thai Nguyen to be submerged, Mr. Kien’s story further fueled our belief in good things. Despite the billions of dong in damage, he still maintained his integrity – a simple act, but containing great value in human character.
