How Taylor Swift fans spend money when traveling to see shows

VnExpressVnExpress06/03/2024

On average, each fan stays three nights on a "Swift holiday" in Sydney to have fun and experience cuisine , spending about 300 USD per day.

To see The Eras Tour in Singapore, Eunice Mecija, a fan from the Philippines, spent $1,600 on the trip.

Mecija bought a CAT3 ticket for $294 and traveled to Singapore by plane and car. The specific cost was $250 for the flight from Manila to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and then continued by car to Singapore. She spent a total of nine days traveling and watching shows, including six days in Malaysia and three days in Singapore, with hotel expenses of more than $1,100. Eunice also planned to buy tickets for The Eras Tour, which will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, in May.

"I think it was worth the money. It was great to meet Taylor Swift and enjoy Singaporean cuisine again," she said.

Before the Singapore show, Taylor Swift also had 7 shows as part of The Eras Tour in Melbourne and Sydney in February. According to Audience360, a live data collection unit, the singer's fans who attended the show in Sydney spent an average of $1,050 on travel, while those who attended the show in Melbourne spent about $1,100.

The company also calculated the difference in spending between fans in different locations. For example, visitors from Queensland and South Australia spent $270 more than those from Tasmania and Victoria to visit Sydney. Meanwhile, visitors from New Zealand spent $500 more than locals to see Taylor Swift.

In terms of hotel costs, Audience360 found the average two-night stay in Sydney to be around $650. Meanwhile, in Melbourne, the average hotel room rate doubled from before the show. Because of the price increase, many fans arrived early to get better rates. Those who came to the show after the first night usually stayed for a maximum of two nights because of the high prices.

The data from this unit also shows that as soon as they secure tickets, fans immediately book flights to the host city. The Eras Tour only takes place in two cities in Australia, and the number of visitors is very large. Therefore, tourists tend to complete services such as plane tickets early to ensure the schedule.

Swifties (Taylor Swift's fan community) don't just go to the show and then go home. On average, a guest spends up to three days in Sydney, enjoying the diverse cuisine and nightlife - spending an estimated $300 per day. In Melbourne, guests stay an average of four to five days, spending $400 per day. For guests from Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand, they stay in Melbourne for about 7.5 days.

Lighthouse, a data provider for the travel and hospitality industry, called the Eras Tour “a hotel phenomenon” in a study published in August. STR, a company that provides data and analytics for the global hotel industry, estimated that hotels earned $208 million from Taylor Swift’s U.S. concerts over the summer. However, that figure only counted the singer’s 53 shows, not including the nights before and after the concerts.

RateGain, a global travel and hotel data provider, also noted a “lasting effect” on tour destinations as travelers create a concept dubbed “Swift holidays”.
