The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City has just sent a document requesting the Department of Finance to consider and advise on the implementation of the Metro line project connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio. The project was proposed for investment research by Vinspeed Company - a member of Vingroup Corporation, with a total length of about 49 km and a total investment of nearly 3 billion USD (more than 76,000 billion VND). According to the plan, this Metro line is expected to start construction in 2026 and be completed in 2028.

According to the proposal, the Can Gio Metro line is designed to be completely elevated, starting from Nguyen Van Linh Street (the section between the intersection of Nguyen Thi Thap and Ly Phuc Man, old District 7), passing through Phu My Hung urban area, old Nha Be area, crossing Soai Rap River and ending at Can Gio sea encroachment urban area.

The Metro line is expected to have two main stations, Tan Thuan and Can Gio, along with a 39-hectare depot for operation and maintenance. When completed, this will be the first coastal Metro line in Ho Chi Minh City, directly connecting the central area with the future coastal urban area.

Notably, the Metro line connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio is one of 12 urban railway lines that were planned before the city merged. The project is proposed to operate at a maximum design speed of 350 km/h - the fastest in Vietnam today.

If approved, this metro line will have a speed more than 3 times higher than metro line No. 1 Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien (110 km/h) and far exceed Cat Linh - Ha Dong line (80 km/h), helping to significantly shorten travel time between the center of Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio.

According to the proposal, the starting point of the Metro line will be located at the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Thi Thap - Ly Phuc Man (old District 7), about 5 km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, conveniently connecting with main traffic routes such as Nguyen Huu Tho and Huynh Tan Phat. The first station is expected to be located in Binh Thuan ward (old District 7).

The Sac Forest route – where the Can Gio Metro line is proposed to run parallel – is currently considered one of the most beautiful routes in Ho Chi Minh City. This route is more than 36 km long, has 6 lanes, and winds through the Can Gio mangrove forest – a world biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO.

If the Metro line is formed, passengers will have a unique experience when they can see the panoramic view of mangrove forests, rivers and the typical ecosystem of Can Gio land right on a modern, high-speed journey.

The end point of the Metro line is planned at the gate of Vinhomes Green Paradise Can Gio project - a sea-encroaching urban area with a scale of nearly 2,900 hectares, total investment capital of about 10 billion USD developed by Vingroup Corporation. When completed, the high-speed Metro line directly connected to this super project will create a synchronous traffic - urban - tourism ecosystem, opening up strong development opportunities for the area.

The combination of modern infrastructure and large-scale projects is expected to turn Can Gio into a new growth pole of Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to shaping the appearance of a modern and dynamic coastal city in the future.
