After days of heavy rain causing serious flooding in the provinces of Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen and Lang Son, on the afternoon of October 8, Mr. Le Ngoc Quyen, Deputy Director of the Northern Hydrometeorological Station (Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) said that the weather in the North is gradually improving, but floods on many rivers are still high and in some places have exceeded historical levels.
“The main cause of the flood is that the circulation of storm No. 11, after making landfall in Guangxi province (China), weakened into a low-pressure area, combined with the strong Southeast wind zone and Southwest wind from the Bay of Bengal, creating a wind convergence zone in the Viet Bac region,” Mr. Le Ngoc Quyen informed.

Accordingly, within just 36 hours from the morning of October 6 to the evening of October 7, the rainfall in Thai Nguyen reached 200-400mm, in some places nearly 600mm; Cao Bang and Lang Son generally had 100-200mm, in some places over 300mm. This rainfall exceeded the average total for October every year, causing many areas to be deeply flooded due to steep terrain and narrow river systems with slow drainage.
According to the Northern Hydrometeorological Station, from today, October 8, in the Northern region, the weather has gradually improved, with sunshine, scattered showers and thunderstorms, and no possibility of widespread heavy rain.

However, the water levels of the rivers remain high. In the past 24 hours, many hydrological stations such as Gia Bay (Cau River), Huu Lung (Trung River), Cau Son (Thuong River) have exceeded the alarm level 3 by 2-5m and are all higher than the historical flood level. Currently, the flood water on the rivers is basically receding, but the Trung River (Lang Son) and Cau River (Bac Ninh) are still rising slowly, forecast to peak tonight, October 8, or tomorrow morning, October 9, exceeding the alarm level III by about 1-2m.

“Flooding in Thai Nguyen may last for 3-4 days, while low-lying areas in Dong Hy, Phu Binh, and Dai Tu may last longer. In Bac Ninh and Lang Son, flooding will last for 2-3 days, while in Cao Bang it will last for about 1-2 days,” the Deputy Director of the Northern Hydrometeorological Station informed.
