Police in Northern Ireland charge seven over inspector's murder

Inspector Caldwell was shot multiple times on 22 February while on duty at a youth sports complex on the outskirts of Omagh, where youth sports are trained.

The lucky survivor made his first public appearance after the attack at Hillsborough Castle on 24 May when he met King Charles, who was visiting the area.

Two 28-year-old men and five men aged 33, 38, 45, 47 and 72 have been charged with attempted murder.

"These charges are welcome news. I would like to thank the PSNI for their efforts and the progress they have made in the case," UK Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris wrote on Twitter.

A 1998 peace deal largely ended three decades of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, but police officers are still occasionally targeted by small groups of mainly nationalist militants opposed to British rule of the region.

All seven men are expected to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court on Monday.
