A cysteine-rich diet helps repair damaged intestines

Once absorbed, cysteine is converted into CoA molecules, which stimulate CD8 T immune cells to secrete IL-22, a protein that plays an important role in intestinal stem cell regeneration.

A new study published in the journal Nature suggests that a diet rich in the amino acid cysteine may help regenerate gut lining damaged by radiation or chemotherapy.

A research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) confirmed that cysteine has the strongest effect on intestinal stem cells among the 20 amino acids they tested.

Foods rich in cysteine include pork, beef, fish, eggs, low-fat yogurt, cheese, oats, lentils, sunflower seeds... When absorbed, cysteine is converted into CoA molecules, stimulating CD8 T immune cells to secrete IL-22, a protein that plays an important role in the regeneration of intestinal stem cells.

Additionally, the team's experiments also showed that a cysteine-rich diet helped reduce intestinal damage in mice treated with the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil, which often damages the intestinal lining.

Professor Omer Yilmaz - head of the research team - emphasized: "The special point in this project is that we do not use synthetic molecules, but take advantage of natural compounds from food."

Scientists expect that if this result is confirmed in humans, a cysteine-rich diet could become an important support method, helping cancer patients reduce side effects during treatment./.
