Discover more surprising effects of 1 Omega-3 fish oil capsule per day

Fish oil has long been used by many people as a health care habit thanks to its richness in omega-3, with familiar benefits such as supporting the cardiovascular system, improving brain and vision.

Now, a new study published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Nutrition has discovered another surprising effect of fish oil.

The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Tuscia (Italy), included menopausal and premenopausal women, aged 53 to 60. All had high cholesterol, were obese or overweight, but had not used medication or supplements before.

Each participant was placed on a Mediterranean diet - rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, olive oil and fish - combined with two supplements:

Omega-3 fish oil: Researchers chose this supplement because of its well-documented benefits in reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors, including high lipid levels.

Phytosterols : Phytosterols (also known as plant sterols) are also known for their ability to help lower cholesterol and triglycerides.

The study aimed to find out whether combining diet with these supplements would reduce cholesterol, weight, and body fat.

Cholesterol, triglyceride, weight, waist circumference, and body fat percentage were monitored for 2–7 months.

Reduced body fat by nearly 1/3

Results have found that combining a Mediterranean diet with omega-3 and phytosterol supplementation may provide significant benefits, particularly in improving blood lipids.

At baseline, most participants had an average BMI of 27, which put them in the overweight or obese range, with high total cholesterol and bad cholesterol levels and low good cholesterol. About 20% had high triglyceride levels.

After a period of applying the Mediterranean diet combined with omega-3 fish oil and phytosterol supplements, the results recorded:

Total cholesterol and bad cholesterol decreased significantly. Good cholesterol increased sharply, up to 65% in postmenopausal women and 58% in premenopausal women.

The ratio of total cholesterol to good cholesterol is improved, helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the health news site Eating Well .

Many people lost body fat, reduced their waist circumference, lowered their BMI, and had a healthier fat distribution. In some cases, their body fat decreased by nearly a third during the study period.

Importantly, omega-3 fish oils play a central role in improving heart health due to their ability to lower triglycerides, increase good cholesterol levels, and support blood lipid balance.

Remarkably, the improvements were noted despite not taking cholesterol-lowering medications – suggesting that diet and supplements can make a significant difference.

These preliminary findings suggest that a personalized nutritional approach may be an effective nonpharmacological strategy for controlling cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors during the menopausal transition and postmenopausal period, the researchers conclude.

The researchers say the results are promising, but larger, longer studies are needed to confirm the results further, according to Eating Well.
