Indonesian expert accuses 'Coach Shin Tae-yong of deliberately lowering the reputation of AFF Cup 2024'

On December 28, coach Shin Tae-yong posted a thank you to the Indonesian players on his personal page. The Korean coach said that although his students are still very young and inexperienced compared to the teams using the strongest force, their performance at the AFF Cup 2024 is still very encouraging.

Responding to Mr. Shin's statement, Indonesian football expert - Mr. Akman Marhali was indignant: " I think at the AFF Cup 2024, the Southeast Asian Football Federation was very angry with coach Shin Tae-yong when he deliberately used many players under 22 years old. This decision is considered to lower the prestige of the tournament and AFF has the right to question Mr. Shin Tae-yong's statements ."

According to this expert, sending a young team to the AFF Cup 2024 is part of Indonesia’s team building plan. However, the failure in this year’s tournament has brought many negative impacts.

In addition to receiving criticism from domestic fans, coach Shin Tae-yong is also accused of reducing the appeal and prestige of the AFF Cup 2024 despite the fact that Indonesia has never won the championship.

Before the match, coach Shin Tae-yong called up 21 players under the age of 22 to participate in the AFF Cup 2024. This strategist called up 3 naturalized players including Rafael Struick, Justin Hubner and Ivar Jenner but only Struick returned to play for his homeland. The striker himself also played poorly and did not contribute much. The most outstanding players were Pratama Arhan, Marsenlino Ferdinan and Asnawi Mangkualam - rare domestic stars who have an influence on the Indonesian team.

The Indonesian Football Federation set a target of getting through the group stage and aiming for the final. However, coach Shin Tae-yong and his team played poorly. They won by luck against Myanmar, lost to Vietnam and were held to a draw by Laos.

In the final match at home, Indonesia still had the right to decide their own fate. In the end, the team lost 0-1 to the Philippines and was eliminated only because of a mistake by Donny Tri Pamungkas.

The end of the 2024 AFF Cup marks the 6th time Indonesia has been eliminated from the group stage and has never won the Southeast Asian championship.
