The earthquake also shook buildings in Taipei. Authorities said subway service in the city continued at reduced speeds.

The weather bureau said the quake was 9.7 km deep and followed a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck off the northeastern coast of Taiwan late Thursday. Weather officials warned of the risk of landslides in mountainous areas after days of rain.
According to preliminary data, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep earthquakes because they are closer to the surface. They can cause light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking may be felt in Hualien City (population 350,500), 23 kilometers from the epicenter.
In April, Hualien was hit by the largest earthquake to hit Taiwan in at least 25 years. Nine people were killed and more than 900 injured in the natural disaster.
