
On the afternoon of October 6, the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) said it had received a quick report from the Irrigation Department of Quang Ngai province on the damage caused by the strong earthquake on the night of October 5 and early morning of October 6 in the communes of Mang But, Mang Den, and Kon Plong.
According to reports, two consecutive strong earthquakes occurred in this area (the one at 19:00:52 on October 5 with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale and the one at 1:28:42 on October 6 with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale) both had a focal depth of about 8.1km.
The tremors of these two biggest earthquakes caused cracks in walls and falling tiles at several schools in Mang But commune. Among them, Mang But 2 Boarding Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities suffered the most damage: the roof of the second floor of the school's headquarters was completely damaged, the walls of four student dormitories were cracked, the roofs of five teacher dormitories were tilted, and many cracks were found at Dak Chun and Dak Lanh schools (in the same Mang But commune).

In Mang Den commune, two households had cracks in their floors and walls, and cracks appeared in some kindergarten and primary school classrooms. Kon Plông commune also experienced tremors but no damage was detected.
The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention said that the People's Committees of communes in Quang Ngai province have inspected, counted and encouraged people to stabilize their lives. Mang But 2 School has arranged for students to temporarily stay in reading rooms and art classrooms, and has stopped operating the computer room to ensure safety. The Quang Ngai Province Irrigation Department continues to assess the damage and will propose remedial measures in the coming days.
Meanwhile, according to information from the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences ), updated to 4 p.m. on October 6, in Quang Ngai province, there were 15 earthquakes on October 6 and 10 on October 5.
The latest earthquake occurred at 11:49:30 (Hanoi time) with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale, also in Mang But commune, with a focal depth of about 8.1km.
