(CLO) A man was attacked with a knife at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin on Friday (February 21), just two days before a landmark election in Germany.

The attack happened at around 6 p.m. local time at the monument commemorating the six million Jews murdered by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany during World War II.

Berlin police said the victim was a 30-year-old male tourist from Spain and was seriously injured, but not in a life-threatening condition.

Authorities said a male suspect was arrested near the crime scene. They added that he was arrested “due to identifiable bloodstains.”

Initially after the attack, police said the suspect was still at large. A manhunt was underway. But about three hours later, a man approached a group of officers at the scene. Officers wrestled him to the ground and arrested him. The man lay face down on the ground while handcuffed.

"The suspect probably attacked the 30-year-old Spanish citizen at 6pm at this memorial," police spokesman Florian Nath said, adding that the man was seen with "blood on his hands".

Video from the scene showed ambulances and heavily armored police lined up along one side of the memorial, a large field of gray concrete pillars where the attack took place. The memorial is across from the US Embassy.

Germany's opposition leader has vowed to push for legislation to restore border controls. Earlier on Friday, an 18-year-old Chechen was arrested on suspicion of planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin, the Bild newspaper reported.

The incidents, along with a series of recent migrant-related attacks, come as Germany heads into a crucial election, with polls suggesting a far-right party (AfD) could come in second place for the first time in nine decades.
