The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is consistently considered one of the greatest orchestras in the world.

From the London Olympic stage to the Grammy Awards, from famous concert halls to blockbuster movies, the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is considered one of the greatest orchestras in the world.

On October 10-11, LSO will return to Hanoi in the program Vietnam Airlines Classic - Hanoi Concert 2025 (VACC 2025), under the baton of conductor Sir Antonio Pappano. This promises to be a historic concert season, marking the increasingly growing international stature of VACC.

LSO – more than a century of history and glory

Founded in 1904, the LSO is the UK’s oldest and most prestigious symphony orchestra. Since its inception, the LSO has been a pioneering force, being the first orchestra in the UK to be run and managed by its musicians, ushering in a new era in world music history.

Over the past 120 years, the LSO has built a huge legacy. They have performed at most of the world's most prestigious theaters, from Carnegie Hall (New York) to Musikverein (Vienna). In 2012, the LSO was the symphony orchestra chosen to perform at the London Olympics Opening Ceremony - an event watched by billions of viewers worldwide. Not only attached to classical stages, the LSO has also appeared at the Grammy Awards, and is famous for appearing on the soundtracks of films such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones.

What makes the LSO so special is the balance between academics and popular vitality. They can captivate music lovers with classic symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, while also conquering young audiences through film music or groundbreaking collaborations with contemporary artists.

Times LSO captivated Vietnamese audiences

LSO is no stranger to Hanoi audiences. Within the framework of VACC, they have performed many times right in the heart of the capital. Coming to Hanoi for the first time in 2017 under the baton of conductor Elim Chan, nearly 100 musicians transformed Ly Thai To Square into an open-air auditorium, attracting the attention of thousands of people on Hoan Kiem Lake walking street. The event had a strong influence, making classical music suddenly become closer, able to reach audiences of all ages.

The following two seasons of VACC were accompanied by the LSO, and 2019 marked a stronger milestone with the leadership of legendary conductor Sir Simon Rattle. He and the orchestra brought a complete program with masterpieces by Berlioz, Mahler, Dvořák, Brahms.

Every time they appear, LSO leaves unforgettable moments, especially with tens of thousands of audiences jostling on the walking street or sitting on the grass to listen to symphony music. This time, they will step into the auditorium of Ho Guom Theater and bring a completely new experience while extending the special cultural friendship between Hanoi and the famous British orchestra.

This is the first time the legendary British orchestra, led by conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, has come to Vietnam.

If LSO is the heart, Sir Antonio Pappano is the soul of the VACC 2025 concert season. This is the first time the legendary British orchestra has been led by Sir Antonio Pappano in Vietnam. Born into a family of Italian origin, Pappano is known as an artist with the ability to combine strict discipline with liberal emotions. He is considered by Musical America as one of the most influential conductors in the world. Over the past three decades, Pappano has conquered the world's leading orchestras, from the Berliner Philharmoniker to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He also spent nearly twenty years with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra before becoming the LSO's principal conductor in 2024.

Coming to Hanoi this time, Sir Antonio Pappano and LSO will lead the audience through world-famous masterpieces, notably Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. If Beethoven is a symbol of indomitable will and belief in victory, Shostakovich sketches the tragic colors of the turbulent 20th century. This combination will open up a musical journey that is both classical and modern, both familiar and new.

With a history of more than a century, its footprints on global stages and its return under the leadership of Sir Antonio Pappano, LSO will bring a special stature to Vietnam Airlines Classic Concert 2025. These two concert nights in October are not only an opportunity to enjoy timeless masterpieces, but also an opportunity for Hanoi to continue affirming its position on the international cultural map. With the companionship of Vietnam Airlines, VACC is not only an art program, but also a bridge to promote the image of Vietnam to the world, affirming the integration position of Hanoi - a thousand-year-old capital but full of modern vitality.

Two concerts by LSO under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano within the framework of VACC 2025 will take place on October 10-11 at the Hoan Kiem Theater. The program is the next touchpoint in the series of events under the "Touch Autumn Hanoi" campaign organized by the Hanoi People's Committee and Vietnam Airlines.
