More than 30 years ago, river cage aquaculture developed strongly, bringing high economic efficiency but also leading to rampant farming, exceeding planning. The consequences were water pollution, hindering waterway traffic.
Re-planning farming areas, a step towards sustainable development
Since 2023, Ho Chi Minh City authorities have relocated, cleared and rearranged farming areas, helping people stabilize production, gradually moving towards sustainable development.
Developing the marine economy, especially cage aquaculture, is considered an advantage of the Ho Chi Minh City area. The re-planning of farming areas has brought about clear results, helping people feel secure in their profession and stabilize their income, as well as opening up a direction for sustainable development for this industry.

Mr. Tran Quoc Hung, a resident of Tam Thang Ward, started raising fish and oysters in 2017 in an area outside the planning area. After being persuaded to move to the planned area in 2022, Mr. Hung said the water environment is clearer, the survival rate of livestock is higher, bringing in a profit of more than 500 million VND/year.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thai's family in Long Son commune also moved to sub-area 8 - Cha Va river from 2022. Thanks to the controlled water source and regular monitoring by the government, his farming model is 5 to 7 times more effective than before, bringing in a stable income of more than 300 million VND/year.

Cooperatives join hands to expand raft village tourism
Not only stopping at farming activities, the cooperatives also cooperate with people to purchase, consume products and develop village tourism.
According to the planning of aquaculture and bivalve farming areas in the period of 2021-2025, Ho Chi Minh City currently has 16 sub-areas with about 400 households, a total of more than 11,000 cages, mainly concentrated in Phuoc Thang ward and Long Son commune. The total farming area is nearly 23 hectares, with more than 51 million juveniles stocked.
