Record heavy rains since the night of October 6 have caused flooding in more than 40 communes and wards in Thai Nguyen . At 3:00 a.m. on October 8, the flood on the Cau River at Gia Bay gauging station peaked at 29.9m, 1.09m above the historical flood level in 2024 (28.81m).
Many central areas of the old Thai Nguyen city that have never been flooded are now deeply flooded, such as Vo Nguyen Giap square, the central roundabout of the old Thai Nguyen city... According to VTC News reporters, until this morning, Gia Sang, Quang Vinh, Tuc Duyen wards... are still heavily flooded, traffic is paralyzed.
Two days after heavy rain, the water still shows no sign of receding.
The water flooded the first floor, people had to use ladders to go to the second and third floors to avoid the flood.
Hundreds of households had to evacuate people and move furniture to the upper floors.
Some low-lying areas were completely isolated, and authorities and people had to use boats and canoes to access and provide support.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, who lives on Luu Nhan Chu Street, Gia Sang Ward, said that the water started to flood into his house on the morning of October 7 and rose very quickly. “By midnight, the first floor was almost completely flooded, only about 20cm to the stairs. My family had to stay up all night to move things and take the children to a relative’s house. This morning, the water still hasn’t receded, the electricity was cut off, so daily life is very difficult,” said Mr. Nguyen.
Not far away, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien, standing in front of her stall submerged in more than half a meter of water, said sadly: “Since I started trading, I have never seen the water rise so quickly. All the goods are wet, my motorbike is broken, and the furniture in the house is no longer usable.”
In Gia Sang ward, residents said they had never seen such a severe flood in over 60 years. By noon on October 8, although the rain had stopped, the water had not receded significantly.
Rescue forces, police, and militia have been mobilized to be on duty 24/7 to assist in evacuating people in dangerous areas, and at the same time coordinate with the electricity industry to temporarily cut off power to ensure safety.
According to the National Hydrometeorological Station, the water level of the Cau River at Gia Bay station is higher than the alarm level 3 and will continue to remain so for a long time. Downstream areas such as Quang Vinh, Gia Sang, and Tuc Duyen are warned of the risk of deep flooding, with the water receding slowly at only about 5-10 cm per hour. Authorities recommend that people in low-lying areas along the Cau River closely monitor warning information and be ready to evacuate when required to ensure the safety of life and property.
